I was born and raised a pro-labor, conservative, Catholic Democrat. I left the party after the '92 primaries. I register as a Republican. I vote reliably Republican. I support many Republican candidates and causes, but I won't admit to being a Republican because … well … Republicans are dumb.
In a recent poll, 53% of respondents said they prefer capitalism over socialism. Only 24% preferred socialism. The rest were not sure. If Republicans merely become honest practitioners of capitalism, they will never lose another election. Someone said, "The problem with socialism is socialism; the problem with capitalism is capitalists." Republican politicians have done a poor job of protecting Americans from creeping socialism or criminal capitalists.
Republicans must work to keep the currency strong, promote savings, reduce taxes and keep regulations few, but effective and well enforced. They need not compromise on conservative principles but must lead by example. They should promote personal responsibility. They must refuse to "define deviancy down" or lower the bar so any damn fool can step over it. Republicans need not fear promoting American exceptionalism: The American way being exceptional, not individual Americans. It gives men the freedom to labor toward fulfilling their dream and then provides a legal system to protect the fruits of that labor.
Republicans seem to have gotten no wiser. They suspect they lost to Democrats in '06 & '08 because they “lost their way”. However, since they seem unsure of a plan to regain the White House or majorities in Congress, they are still unaware of what “their way” is.

Communism. No other word is more appropriate when describing the infiltration of The Republican Party,The Democrat Party, Congress, The World Bank, the news media, election committees, and the key group: The school system. Ah, the schools, what better way to start from the pre school on up to keep the truth from society. I'm afraid groveling is not as beneficial to the Country as a complete overhaul of our schools.

Our Government has been playing in the slop of the Pig Pen, feeding off Pork Barrel deals. We can only hope that like the Prodigal Son they will come back to the table with lesson learned. We wanted honesty and ethics the truth of standing by moral principles and the promise of less government and protection of our borders. We asked they listen to U.S.(us) people instead they turned deaf ears to our pleas. They earned what they deserved defeat!!
Surprising that one Sarah Palin who walks her talk and expounds truth and common sense is derided. Shame on those simpletons and the media that would throw America to the proverbial wolves of Socialism Oops I mean Communism.
Will Republicans groveling be the answer? I fear not. It will take more than that to remove the stench of the Pig Pen.

Our future voting will be the only way to clean the air of polluted politics.

The Republican Party - as we knew it - is dead. The assassin was George W. Bush with an assist from the RNC for running the moribund John McCain in 2008.

As why spiral into socialism, where is the voice of opposition? Why is the Republican Party so silent, so devoid of leadership?

A couple of words come to mind to describe the Republican Party. One is flaccid (soft, limp and weak) the other pusillanimous (cowardly, lacking courage, fainthearted). Perhaps the symbol for Republicans should be a plate of spaghetti - without the meatballs!

Jane,

I agree with your column. The problem with quite a few Republican lawmakers today in Washington is that they simply lack insight. The Democratic Party while still very formidable because the spiritual powers of darkness support it has basically been ruined since the deaths of the Kennedy brothers in the 1960s. Today, a typical Republican congressman or senator, however, takes the approach toward the left of "I'm okay, you're okay." No, the left is not okay because it supports abortion on demand, gay rights, and socialism.

It was predictable that Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe announced that they would vote to confirm Sonia Sotomayor (One of the worst Supreme Court nominees ever) to the Supreme Court, but it also was revealing that Richard Lugar and Lindsey Graham announced they would vote for her. Lugar and Graham are classic examples of Republican wimps, and one thing they could learn from their liberal counterparts but never will, is that members of the hard left would never vote to confirm a solid conservative to the Supreme Court.

Before they take office, incoming new Republican members of Congress should take some kind of course 101 to at least learn from the hard left about how they stick together and are formidable. For Republicans such as Collins, Snowe, Lugar, and Graham, however, it is too late for them, and they would never ask for forgiveness from the American voters because they don't believe that they have done anything wrong.

The day the Republican Party asked for my opinion in a survey and then wanted $8.00 to have it tabulated I said "Get Lost". I became an independent voter. I now will vote for whomever is a conservative and represents conservative principles.
Democrats and Republicans are alike and neither party is worthy to represent the people of America. Whenever you have to decide to vote for the lesser of two evils, its time to make a change.

Subject: groveling Republicans....not so far!

Here's what I sent to the Republican National Committee after the election. I see no evidence they haver read it. Thanks and keep up the good write! TC

“POST ELECTION REPUBLICAN RANT/ROUT

Bush epitomizes the phony conservatism the Republicans have been dishing out for decades - $10T in debt, two inane wars, open borders, Wall Street bailout, the decidedly UNpatriot Act, ETC.! Their radical, extremist, war-mongering, budget-busting, anti-Constitution agenda has been the antithesis of anything conservative. Instead of repudiating this radical, wildly unconservative agenda, GOP leaders and their talking excusers/apologizers - Limbaugh, Hannity, O’Reilly - defend and portray this extremism as rational, prudent, and of course “conservative.” It is a sign of deep internal rot when GOP Big Government/Corporatism/Militarism/Fascism makes Obama’s Socialism/Communism appear more moderate and preferable. The GOP’s failure to follow genuine conservative principles has secured their well-earned defeat at the polls but worst of all, has put our economy, our Constitution, and our country in mortal danger! GOP - either follow the Constitution or get the hell out of the way!”

I’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback on the above rant. Most people - even Republicans - can see varying levels of truth in what I say. The number one issue that Republicans have decidedly ignored for generations is our fraudulent, dishonest money system, the Federal Reserve, that has given government an unlimited checking account to grow and expand the role of the Federal Government into all aspects of our lives. Until we have an honest Constitutional money system to keep the Federal Government within its Constitutional limitations, ALL other solutions will be useless! Money should be a public commodity like water, not a device for private bankers to enrich themselves and collude with corrupt government to embezzle the wealth of citizens with inflation/deflation. I lay the blame for the current collapsing-on-its-own-greed economy squarely on the Federal Government, the Federal Reserve, and the Republican Party. Until I see you embrace the Constitution with limitations on the size, power, and scope of the Federal Government, I will vigorously oppose you and radical agenda henceforth. As said, either support the Constitution or get the hell out of the way!

Most Sincerely, Tom Clunie D.C.

And my letter to WND that was published last week:

Diane West's article http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2009/07/19/the_alarming_growth_of_federal_government.html about Obama's socialism is so typical of the shallow, no real solution complaining I am hearing from so-called "conservatives" or Republicans these post-election days. Perhaps it is because they along with most Americans have forgotten what it takes to have true freedom from a totalitarian Federal Government dominating every aspect of our lives. There is so little difference between Democrats and Republicans - they are both "statists" who believe that an all-powerful central government is the solution to all our societal ills. Both parties have turned their back on Constitutional limitations on the size/power and scope of the Federal Government, and instead seek unceasingly to expand the welfare/warfare state at every opportunity.

Socialism and welfare/warfare statism REQUIRES a dishonest, fiat monetary system that acts as an unlimited checking account for government. The PRIVATE, deceptively misnamed Federal Reserve System is the primary mechanism fueling our all-powerful welfare/warfare state. Until this dishonest, fiat monetary system is abolished and replaced with honest, Constitutional money, we will NEVER keep the Federal Government within its Constitutional limitations. NEVER! All other solutions will be utterly useless until we have Constitutional money.

This collusion of greedy bankers and politicians has existed since 1913 and now we are trillions of dollars in debt, fighting two (more!) utterly senseless wars, and are enveloped by a historic economic meltdown that is directly caused by our abandonment of Constitutional money. Either we get greedy, power-seeking, statist Democrats and Republicans to reinstate Constitutional money and obey the limitations of the Constitution or we will cease to exist as a free Republic, and Democrat/Republican-engendered Fascism will be out lot.

Republicans especially, at this time, need to understand how they have contributed to the very ills they are complaining about. If they fail to own up to their own support of Marxist/statist economics and the ills it is causing, then it is time to leave the GOP in the dustbin of history and move on to a party that truly does support the Constitution and its limitations on governmental expansion. TC in S. Oregon

From the beginning its been previous administrations ultimate fault that illegal immigration has never been retired. Years of neglect and intentional overlooking of the laws that were in place? It's grandiose excuse to allow the 20 million plus illegal immigrants to stay on American soil. Congress when enacted the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) of 1986 has been flagrantly ignored. The IRCA toughened criminal sanctions for employers who hired illegal aliens, denied illegal aliens federally funded welfare benefits, and legitimized some aliens through an amnesty program–EXCEPT THESE LAWS NEVER WERE ENFORCED?

There has always been complicity since the earliest days, between the lawmakers, big business, the open border zealots and radical pro-immigration and anti-American sovereignty organizations. Just like the Globalist they have an attitude that American taxpayers should accommodate every illegal family, with free medical care, schooling and a comfortable prison cell, for criminals and for the thousands of illegal alien drunken drivers every year. That globalist agenda has always been a free movement of cheap labor, between all of South America, Canada and Mexico, just as secretly arranged with the 3 countries leaders in Waco, Texas, at the end of March 2005.

Americans only forceful action is to build on E-verify, but not to replace it? Sen. Charles Schumer, D-New York and chairman of the Senate Judiciary subcommittee on immigration wants consider up-grading the application, with modifications to authenticate the employee’s identity by using a specific and unique biometric identifiers? Schumer, stated "improving employment verification is critical to boosting public confidence about curbing illegal immigration, which will build support for comprehensive immigration reform." These politicians just don't get it? Outside of the American Civil War, there will be a battle over giving illegal immigrants a path to citizenship free-ride? What about the millions of people with integrity and believe in the Rule of Law, who sit and wait in far off foreign countries for an entry visa?

Whatever the outcome it will not be easy to pass any Immigration reform or AMNESTY? Say--NO-- because it going to cost trillions of dollars (with a T) in enactment. Health care, Pensions, retirement and a rush on government benefits, for those who haven't already cheated the system. Then they will want their immediate families here? And waiting millions will swarm the open areas of the sovereign border fence? IT WILL NEVER END? Call your Politician today at 202-224-3121 GOOGLE---NUMBERSUSA, AMERICANPATROL for facts, that will not be found in most press releases.

As a Independent voter, I do believe in a alternative government medical system, but I adamantly disagree on donating my taxes from public treasuries free health care to anybody who steals across our border or anything that smells of AMNESTY?

Schumer, stated “improving employment verification is critical to boosting public confidence about curbing illegal immigration, which will build support for comprehensive immigration reform.” These politicians just don’t get it? Outside of the American Civil War, there will be a battle over giving illegal immigrants a path to citizenship free-ride? What about the millions of people with integrity and believe in the Rule of Law, who sit and wait in far off foreign countries for an entry visa?

Whatever the outcome it will not be easy to pass any Immigration reform or AMNESTY? Say–NO– because it going to cost trillions of dollars (with a T) in enactment. Health care, Pensions, retirement and a rush on government benefits, for those who haven’t already cheated the system. Then they will want their immediate families here? And waiting millions will swarm the open areas of the sovereign border fence? IT WILL NEVER END? Call your Politician today at 202-224-3121 GOOGLE—NUMBERSUSA, AMERICANPATROL for facts, that will not be found in most press releases.

As a Independent voter, I do believe in a alternative government medical system, but I adamantly disagree on donating my taxes from public treasuries free health care to anybody who steals across our border or anything that smells of AMNESTY?

The only difference between the Republicans and Democrats is the spelling. Outside of that, they are prety much the same. Look how spending reached all time levels under Bush and a Republican controlled congress. It will not change if in 2010 the Republicans gain control of both houses. Washington is broken beyond repair, and like other things broken beyond repair, it should be tossed in the dumps of history.

It is time for individual states to assert themselves and secede from Washington, leaving it to collapse under its own weight.

Perhaps a mass contact to Steele would alter his approach. I feel as you do and no longer wish to identify with a party but rather with an ideology of conservativism. If we the people are going to alter the direction of this government then we the people must dictate how it's going to be done! Thanks, Jane. A superb column!
