The meteoric political rise of Barack Obama is something rarely seen in American politics. In 2000, he was soundly defeated in his first and only bid for a spot in the U.S. House of Representatives. Four years later, he was propelled into the Senate and, after serving one-third of his term, is a presidential front-runner with the wind at his back.Most Americans choose their president the way a 7-year-old chooses her Barbie doll. Run, Tom, Run!

He once received a call from Bush political strategist Karl Rove instructing him “never again to darken the doorstep of the White House.” Now, he is laying the groundwork to live there.Tom Tancredo is not a household word. He doesn’t have movie star good looks or a big, fat checkbook; nor has he spent the bulk of his free time as a congressman attending fund-raisers for other GOP candidates so that he can call in his chits – little IOUs for political endorsements.

Stars Who Could Lead the Constitution Party in 08

Recently, I was taken to task by Howard Phillips, the founder of the U.S. Taxpayer Party – now the Constitution Party – for an error I made in a column titled “What’s Wrong with the Two Party System?” In that column, I lamented the fact that, in the last election, I “threw away” two votes by voting for the American Independent because there was no way I could justify voting for either major-party candidate. (The American Independent Party is an affiliate of the Constitution Party in my state.)I incorrectly stated that the Constitution Party makes a “living for its leadership,” but does little else. I should have said “makes a living for its staff.” The leadership of the party takes no salary, and I want to make it clear that its dedicated staff – like most in the conservative movement – is underpaid.
