The ACORN and the Obama Tree

An ACORN doesn’t fall far from the tree so Obama — the big oak on whom the Democrats have pinned their hopes — is trying to kick it as far away as he possibly can.

Ties between Obama and ACORN – the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now – are legion. However, now that ACORN’s part in the sub prime mortgage mess has been exposed and the group’s voter registration programs have become an object of public scorn, the junior senator from Illinois is trying to throw ACORN overboard as he did his former pastor and a laundry list of other unseemly characters.

An Obama website states:
• Fact: Barack was never an ACORN community organizer.
• Fact: ACORN never hired Obama as a trainer, organizer, or any type of employee.
• Fact: ACORN was not part of Project Vote, the successful voter registration drive Barack ran in 1992.

Fortunately for the American public, the Cleveland Leader and others have unearthed an article by Toni Foulkes of ACORN, previously blocked from the web, which shows that Obama’s recent effort to unhitch his wagon from this discredited organization is a sham.

In this article entitled, “Case Study: Chicago-The Barack Obama Campaign,” which appeared in Social Policy magazine in 2004, Foulkes writes that ACORN recruited Obama for its lawsuit against the state of Illinois involving the motor-voter law.
Foulkes states,

Obama then went on to run a voter registration project with Project VOTE in 1992 that made it possible for Carol Moseley Braun to win the Senate that year. Project VOTE delivered 50,000 newly registered voters in that campaign (ACORN delivered about 5,000 of them).

Since then, we have invited Obama to our leadership training sessions to run the session on power every year, and, as a result, many of our newly developing leaders got to know him before he ever ran for office.”

Social Policy magazine was published by the Institute for Social Justice which shares a New Orleans address with ACORN.

Like many recent political scandals, the effort to cover them up shows a pattern of dishonesty that should be troubling to any potential Obama voter.

All of us have things in our past that we would change if we could. No one is perfect, but honest people own their mistakes. They don’t try to obfuscate.

The question is why would ACORN be involved in the coverup? After all, it appears that Obama is spurning the organization!

The answer is quite simple. ACORN and Obama’s goals are one and the same and they are much too radical for a Main Street. ACORN is working with Obama in order to fool us into believing that Obama feels the same way about democracy, hard work, truth and justice that you and I do.

ACORN uses its various affiliates to lobby for a guaranteed “living wage” and “tax justice” which are euphemisms for socialism. Obama and ACORN are committed to destroying the free enterprise system as we know it and, in the process, they are registering dead people, children and cartoon characters to vote!

The worst part of all is that ACORN is using our own tax dollars to undermine our system of government. The Consumers Rights League discovered that 40 percent of ACORN’s funding now comes from you and me. The ACORN Housing Corporation alone received some $16 million from 1997-2007. AHC is a tax-exempt organization which is not allowed to share funds with its political affiliate. However, money is fungible. The more money ACORN gets from taxpayers, the more it frees up the money from member dues and donor gifts (corporate shakedowns) and the like to be channeled into its questionable political activities.

Barack Obama has pledged to cut out wasteful government spending but will he pledge to stop our tax dollars from going to organizations like ACORN that have a political arm? Not in this lifetime!

The worst part of this scandal, is that Democrats tried to sneak a provision in the $700 billion bailout bill that required that 20 percent of the profits from the bailout go into something called the Housing Trust Fund, which acts as a slush fund for groups like ACORN. Bush was willing to look the other way, but thankfully, Republicans in the House of Representatives would not go for it!

Some economists are predicting that the government will get all of the $700 billion back.  Twenty percent of $700 billion would have been $140 billion.  That’s a tidy little sum!

If Obama is elected president and Democrats control both houses of Congress, than more and more money will flow to ACORN and like-minded groups and ACORN can really do some damage.  That’s why ACORN is willing to endure this snub from Obama.

  1. Jane,

I’ve noticed like you pointed out in your column that Obama lies a lot. This is not only because that he has much to cover up concerning his associations and true ideology beliefs but also like all Marxists Obama believes that the end result justifies the means at reaching an objective. The sad thing is that many Americans planning to vote for Obama do not know that he is a Marxist, and they will find out too late if he does indeed get elected. The Germans that elected Hitler did not know what they were getting either, but unfortunately history often repeats itself.

In last night’s debate, for the first few minutes, it looked as though McCain was going to draw clear distinctions between his policy and Obama’s. He did not.

I have observed a pattern with older politicians that have common sense on their side. They have been around so long they assume everyone gets it and they can’t be bothered to learn how to articulate the facts in a debate.

Obama carefully prepared for the debate. He learned his lines well. McCain was out campaigning until the last minute. He just couldn’t be bothered.

It was the same in Bush 41’s debate with Clinton and with Jack Kemp’s VP debate with Al Gore. Kemp knew public policy. He was intimately involved in shaping it but he couldn’t be bothered to prep for the debate and he wasn’t able to spit out a few simple facts at the right moment. They were disasters.

Last night, McCain would trail off into small items that few understood or where there were no clear differences with Obama’s policy. For the third time he wasted the opportunity. Too bad.

  3. Nice article…but unfortunately I think it is missing one very important point. Unless I am mistaken, which is easy to do with a story so muddled by MSM, the $700 billion bailout bill has in it a $400 mortgage fee that will be added to every mortgage and go straight to ACORN. So, assuming that is true, the “fearless” republicans slammed the front door on the first ACORN scam while opoening the back door to a $400 million dollar scam. And maverick McCain was in the middle of all of it. He likes to talk big…but refuses to take the tough stand against these socialist ideas. In addition it does no good to have real pro-lifers sit in the corner wringing their hands in silence, as faux pro-lifers such as j farah work harder at selling books and ultimately getting obama elected than he does in moving the pro-life message forward. The hypocrisy has killed the pro-life message in this election cycle as even obama is claiming to be pro-life in his own way. And who can speak against him when no one is speaking against these others? As usual defeat is snatched from the jaws of vicotory in the final moments…..sendng us back into the pro-life wilderness for another 40 years. Hope j farah enjoys those bloodmoney book profits.

  4. Michael,

It is confusing. The fee you spoke of is a tax that was slipped into the housing bill President Bush signed in July, not the $700 billion bailout bill. This tax is designed to channel some $600 million annually in grants for developing and restoring housing, mostly as low-income rentals, available to ACORN and other groups. Sad!

Last October HUD announced some $44 million in new “housing-counseling” grants that will go to groups like ACORN. Under Bush 43, these grants have increased by 150 percent. Republicans are complicit in the sub-prime mortgage crisis to the extent that they have largely looked the other way.

Presently House Minority Leader John Boehner and the Consumer Rights League are leading an effort to reopen this issue and have the money that flows to ACORN cut off. Join them. Help spread the word!

  5. Your article is informative. I think Obama is the ultimate Marxist. It
disturbed me today how the so called conservatives did not lash out at
president for taking us from a quasi socialist government down the road to
the a complete movement to communism. Paulson yesterday gave an ultimatum to
the big bank yesterday to allow the Federal government without my permission
to by stocks into their banks. Even though some of the banks are in good
shape. This is no long the United States. It is the United States Socialist
Republic. We are becoming the old Soviets. Bailouts during his term clearly
show us president Bush is an FDR Republican. I saw this when I had to hold
my nose twice and vote for him. I am leaving the Republican that does not
follow republican ideas this country was founded on.
Those like Rush, Hannity drink the cool aid for the president even when he
violates constitutional law. I do fear now that Obama will win the election
that this will be that last election we know as a free society and that
thinks no longer can be changed at the ballot box because of the Republican
    wimps.

Thanks for the partial answer…of course you shied away from addressing my further point. And don’t think this hypocrisy on the pro-life issue is being missed by those on the pro-abortion side. They saw how romney was drawn and quartered about being a fake pro-lifer….and now see him out on the trail stumping for the pro-life ticket, much of it on his own dime, while those who called him a fake and a liar and held themselves up as the true meassure of pro-life now work against the pro-life ticket. It is more than just republicans being closet socialist and wimps…it is a pro-life movement that wimped out when the final battle cry was given…and led with hypocrisy. There are those who will say how “well the other side is full of hypocrits”..sure..but they claim no moral standing. Hypocrisy from those who claim a moral high standing is a thousand times worse. If people have only hypocrits to chose from, might as well go with the real deal and skip the moral lectures.

Please see my column “Why Conservatives eat some of their young” https://janechastain.com/2008/02/07/why-do-conservatives-e
    at-some-of-their-young/#more-70

In all my years of working with the pro-life movement, one of my greatest frustrations is that we are divided and we often let the good be the enemy of the perfect. There are no perfect candidates just as there are no perfect individuals.

The differences between the candidates of the two parties this year are huge on most issues — the most important issue — by far — is the judicial philosophy on the Supreme Court. We are one justice away from having a court where the majority believes its job is interpreting the Constitution, not re-defining it to fit the current standard of political correctness.

If Obama gets in the court will remain liberal for years to come.

I believe the stakes are much too high to sit this one out or cast a vote for a third party candidate.

There are times, when we have to lose in order to win. The 1990 election was a case in point. After two years of having Clinton and the Dems go unchecked, the Republicans were able to take over Congress. Unfortunately, after two years, most lost their resolve and became more concerned about keeping themselves in power than anything else.
(If they had remained steadfast, our country would be much stronger than it is today.)

Joseph Farah and others believe that denying McCain the victory will bring about a greater good as it did in 1992. I don’t see it that way. (If McCain had chosen a pro-abortion running mate I would be sitting this one out as well.)

However, I have known Joseph for many, many years and he is NOT a faux pro-lifer. He is as sincere in his beliefs as I am and I respect his point of view.

    However, I know Joseph Farah

  8. Well your response carries no weight with me…just more hypocrisy fo the pile. Why is he allowed to totally trash and lie about a presidential candidate who in the end proves that he is what he said he was with no demands of opology from the pro-life movement for j farah’s obvious lies…while it is farah who comes up with some flimsy excuse for covertly handing the supreme court back to the pro-abortionists? What about me and his hateful emails to me questioning my pro-life credentials since I was backing and supporting romney. Here he is setting himself up as the judge of all who are prolife…and trashing those who don’t measure up to king farah..and yet we are here working and he is there selling books on the backs of the soon to be newly aborted. I could care less if he doesn’t kick small dogs. And I will put up my 25 years and all I have done for the pro-life movement against anyone…including king farah. The fact is he wrote that book BEFORE anything was ever decided in the primaries..so he was commited to working indirectly for whateve pro-abort candidate that came up in his misguided scheme to cause another ’94 revolution. Instead I submit we are going to get another 40 years of anything goes abortions. But, no one will make him apologize for that either.

What he needs is a royal smackdown…so everyone can see there are not two sets of standards…those applied to everyone else and those applied with kid gloves to the “leaders” of the pro-life movement. the movement has been split and the wedge his hypocrisy and the pro-lifers invited it in by unfairly slamming one group while doing nothing against turncoat leaders.
