The Gospel According to Newsweek

Christians believe that the Bible is “God-breathed,” handed down, unchanged throughout the ages by the Creator himself.

Then, along comes Newsweek. In next week’s cover story, “Our Mutual Joy,” Lisa Miller advocates for gay marriage and tells us that God really didn’t mean all those explicit pronouncements against homosexuality in his holy Word.

This shoddy diatribe, passed off as objective journalism, is the end result of giving the job of covering a serious subject like religion to a society editor.

It is obvious to any student of the Bible that Ms. Miller hasn’t bothered to read the good book for herself but relies on the writings of “enlightened” liberal theologians who are not above picking a fight with the Almighty or, at the very least, want to choose what biblical truths to accept or reject.

The central point of the Miller argument is this: Many of the individuals used by God were imperfect creatures and didn’t have the kind of union prescribed by God in Genesis 2:24-25 and later outlined by Paul in his New Testament letters. Therefore, we cannot and should not use the Bible as a “how-to script.”

In fact, the Miller arguments end up fighting with one another, pointing out the sheer pointlessness of her exercise.

First, Miller argues that Jesus was “indifferent to earthly attachments.” She confuses the apostle Paul’s encouragement to those who would remain single and unencumbered in order to spread the Gospel, as a pronouncement against this sacred institution, asserting that Paul regarded marriage as “an act of last resort for those unable to contain their animal lust.”

Further down the page, she states, “While the Bible and Jesus say many important things about love and family (come on Miller you can’t have it both ways) neither explicitly defines marriage as between one man and one woman (check out the Genesis reference above).”

While columnists are paid for their opinions, a journalist is supposed to be fair and balanced. However, Miller quotes only one pastor, the Rev. Richard A. Hunter, who holds to a traditional view of marriage for the sole purpose of ridicule. She concludes that “no sensible modern person wants marriage – theirs or anyone else’s – to look in its particulars anything like what the Bible describes.”

Furthermore, Miller states, “Scripture gives us no good reason why gays and lesbians should not be civilly and religiously married – and a number of excellent reasons why they should.”

Really?

There are six primary references to homosexuality in the Bible and countless other condemnations against the practice recorded during the second temple and rabbinic periods.

The first primary reference deals with the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah in Genesis 19. The second reference, in Leviticus 18 is a specific pronouncement against it and other gross offenses. It is an expansion of the seventh commandment and is consistent with God’s purpose for human sexuality. In Leviticus 20, punishment is proscribed and homosexuality is called “a detestable act.”

Miller ignores the first reference and calls the other two “throwaway lines in a peculiar test given over to codes for living in the ancient Jewish world.” Yes, these prohibitions against homosexuality in Leviticus are sandwiched between rituals that were imposed on the Jewish people but there is a difference between ritual and moral law. If you throw out the commandments in Leviticus, then you must throw out the laws against murder, adultery and stealing.

To make the matter perfectly clear, the condemnation against homosexuality is repeated in the New Testament in three places: Romans 1, I Timothy 9 and 10 and I Corinthians 6:9.

Miller refers only to the citation in Romans 1, where she quotes the rants of Neil Elliot, who tries to tell us these passages were specifically directed at two despicable Roman emperors who coerced people. It is in this section that Miller completely exposes her lack of knowledge and biblical curiosity when she argues and that Bible says nothing about sexual acts between women.

Romans 1:26-27:

For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.

The truths in scripture are repeated throughout scripture. The Bible is either the word of God or it isn’t. If it isn’t, why do folks like Miller work so hard to try to twist it into something they find acceptable? Why not simply ignore God and the Bible and go to the beach?

    Christ’s return is getting closer and closer. Newsweek obviously has a gay agenda, and poor Lisa Miller is simply spiritually blind and in a deep spiritual fog. Why are so many people ignorant about history or they ignore it concerning how homosexuality has brought down many nations and empires in the past? Homosexuality is a curse from Satan who originally used it to try to stop the birth of Christ. That’s the truth, but then again, Lisa Miller would probably deny that Satan exists to begin with.

    Here are a few more verses (actually two) from different translations. The blind can not see, it is clear that the Bible does teach about many sins and not being in Heaven. It also is clear that those that continue to willfully sin are not going to be there (in Heaven) either. It really does not matter wether we like it or not! Let me point out that the loving mentioned here of brothers is not sexually related. I know you knew that but just in case some moron happens to read something into it that is not there. There are many ohter verses that relates to God letting people believe in delusions and he (God) even helping delude them if that is what they seek.

  4. OOOPS. Newsweek claims a circulation over 4 million a week. However, dilete the photos and the ads and there is maybe 25 pages compared to 1000 + for the bible. This gives the bible an advantage of 3 billion pages to 100 million per week, and very few bibles wind up in the bottom of a bird cage.

I’ve been in the ministry and around the Conservative Block myself. In the 60s I had the rare privilege of studying Economics under one of the few remaining Gold Standard Economists. Most folks are unaware that the original American economic system was based on Leviticus 25. I’ve written a book comparing that with our present debt based system.     The pipe dream of so-called Christians, the entirety of the US ‘returning’ to God..

    That ANY entire nation can ‘return’ to God is completely refuted here.

    Answer a question. The 1st century Christians lived under a tyrant, Caesar. They were crucified, not only crucified, but covered with pitch and lit afire to light the streets of Rome.

    God commanded these Christians to HONOUR that tyrant! 1Peter 2:17

    Eighteenth century Christians said King George III was a tyrant, then they killed men over real estate, commerce and taxes.

    Why didn’t 1 Peter 2:17 apply to the colonist Christians?

    Where do we see Christ provoked to kill men?

    American Christianity began in disobedience! And has stayed there, as you post points out. You believe the words of Americans over the Word of God.

  7. We have learned nothing in 2,000 years? Not even Jesus’s lessons, which would certainly be relevant here?

    An intelligent reading of Newsweek’s cover story would reveal its point that the bible teaches inclusivity, that it is used willy-nilly to support social agendas and that, if taken literally, it contradicts itself too often to be of any use. Yet Jane jumps on the article to spew her message of discrimination and intolerance, which could have been written from a cave 1,500 years ago or from her townhouse in California last month for all the insight and learning it offers.

    In contrast to the beauty of creation, of love, the mystery of existence and even the overall brilliance of the bible itself…, how sad to sift through scant, questionably translated sentences from the stone age in a simpleminded effort to codify discrimination and hate. Get with it, Jane Chastain. You have nothing to offer but “no” and hate. And even if you were right, who cares? Not everyone’s Christian. You’re dangerous, hiding your hate behind your religion while you use your religion to deny rights that you enjoy from people different from you.

  8. Merry Christmas Jane! We really need to pray for the west coast region; apparently, there is some kind of evil spirit (perhaps a principality) that is blinding the people over spiritual matters. As for Lisa Miller, she knows deep down that she is wrong, yet she arrogantly looks for things to excuse herself and probably her way of life.

    Now to you Mike Will: I am tempted to rip your reply to shreds, but I’m restraining myself. Jane and I used to work together, and she is a very kind person, and she does not offer hate. What she is handing out is called tough love.

    Mike, on the day that you die, you will be facing God, and you will be going over everything you have done and experienced in your life. Your reply to Jane, and my response to what you wrote will be among the things you will be answering to. The ball is in your court, so choose wisely.

  9. Edward, when gays have been harassed and hated and misunderstood for thousands of years, and Jane Chastain uses her time to slander them as a people and prevent their rights and happiness, you can call it what you want but I stick by my term. Even though you used to work with her.

    Also, you do not have to inform people of your morbid predictions of the afterlife. We’ve all heard it before. You don’t have to run to God and hide behind him either, or use him to threaten anyone, easy and tempting as it probably is. We’re all familiar with your idea that God’s mind is as small as Jane Chastain’s but I believe you are wrong.

  10. Now to you Edward Endo: The judgment you say Mike Will will face is the same judgment you will face. If there is only one God and only one Judge, then your (and Jane’s) “judging” of homosexuals and the west coast region is morally wrong and you will have to answer to that one day. Furthermore, “tough love” was created by man. Love without limitations is from the Creator. Choose wisely.
