Sending Assad to Bed without Supper

Obama’s message to Assad is a classic.

It is tantamount to a mom who lacks the intestinal fortitude to discipline a naughty child.  Instead of simply taking care of a problem when it happens, she stamps her foot and tells her youngster, “When your dad get’s home, he is going o punish you!”

For the first time in his four plus years as president, Obama has suddenly gone all constitutional on us.

He drew a red line on the use of chemical weapons for Syria’s dictator Bashar Assad again, and again.  In fact, there is evidence that this red line has been crossed as many as 14 times.

After losing face on the world stage, Obama beat his chest and announced that he is finally going to “punish” Assad with the help of some of our allies.  Our best friends turned their backs on him and refused to participate (another embarrassment).   There was more chest pounding as our warships moved into position.  Then, Obama suddenly calls a halt to the operation in order to ask permission from Congress.  Obama simply did not have the stomach to go it alone.

In this case, Obama is the mom  (the one in the frilly undershorts) and Congress is the dad.

It’s this all too familiar scenario,  dad (Congress) comes home after work (in this case a month-long vacation) and the misdeed is all but forgotten.   Does he take out his belt and start World War III or does he simply send the child to bed without supper?

Contrast this with the Israeli mom, Benjamin Netanyahu (the one in the big girl panties) who takes decisive action when necessary.  By the time dad comes home, the household is peaceful and there is no hint that mom took any action at all.   If a question is asked about the discipline she dishes out from time to time, she makes no comment and simply smiles demurely.

Israel doesn’t beat her chest and threaten war.  However, the Jewish state is known to have carried out several foreign military attacks recently.

In 2007, there was an airstrike that destroyed a Syrian nuclear facility that was being built at Al Kibar.

In late January, the IDF attacked  a convoy carrying shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles and Iranian short-range ballistic missiles believed destined for Hezbollah fighters in Syria.

On July 5, an Israeli submarine launched a cruise missile attack on the port city of Latakia  that is believed to have destroyed a shipment of Russian-made anti-ship missiles.

How do we know these things?  Not because of Israeli chest pounding.  We know through the process of elimination and leaks from the Obama Pentagon.  Yes, with friends like Obama, Israel doesn’t need enemies!

At this point, there are no good options for attacking Syria.   The options we do have are becoming more dangerous and less appealing with each passing day.

As Obama dithers, Russia is sending warships to the region and Assad is moving his military assets out of the areas we targeted and moving innocent civilians into them.

Also, the moderate rebels have been steadily losing ground to the Muslim Brotherhood and al Qaeda.  Ousting Assad may bring about a government that is far worse that the present one.

We know that this latest chemical weapons attack killed 1429 people in the most inhumane way possible.  However, we cannot be sure that this nerve agent was used by Assad.  Many believe it was used by al Qaeda forces who have gained access to some of these weapons.  It’s no secret that the rebels have their backs against the wall and al Qaeda has no qualms about killing innocent civilians to further its goals.

Yes, the administration assures us that Assad did this deed.  This is the same administration that told us the attack on our embassy in Benghazi was simply a reaction to a video, even though it knew better.

Call me cynical but maybe, just maybe, this president needs a little war to distract the media from the problems plaguing his administration.  It wouldn’t be the first time this has happened.  Remember Kosovo?

Congress should have no part of it!  If we are going to do something constructive in Syria we need a clear-cut objective.  Also, we need to take our cue from the Israelis and attack when they least expect it.

Anything we do now would be like our reluctant dad sending his unruly child to bed without supper with a bag of potato chips in one hand and a candy bar in the other.

  1. You said it best, Jane, this Syrian war is to distract us from the sad state of the economy. Perhaps Miley Cyrus was ordered to distract us from the war.

We can give arms to the Syrian rebels as long as they’ve each had a proper Brady background check. This is a new phase of “Fast and Furious”.

Today Kerry announced the Arabs will pay for our ground assault. So our army is now for rent?

As Kissinger said of the Iran/Iraq war, it’s “a pity they both can’t lose”.

  2. What a mess, I just cannot get over the stupidity of advising our adversaries of how we plan to attack them. Then we wait for Syria to move their targeted areas to another location, no doubt to schools and hopitals just as they do in Palestine.
Growing up in war torn England, I know when a bomb falls in my neighborhood I or my neighbor will die. To die in war whether by bullet, bomb, decapitation, gas or missile is not a choice. When men be they dictators or ill advised govenment representatives “We the People” do not want more war.
Think better the price of a missle would supply more comfort to the refugees, food not guns.

  3. This internal fight among different Muslim factions, the rebels included, is none of our business. Whoever wins it will be “business as usual” with more fighting later. That is their culture, their religion, their way of life and of “solving” problems. Also, there hasn’t been proof beyond a reasonable doubt that Assad was the culprit. I’ve seen reports that a mishandling of the dangerous canisters by untrained rebels (or some other faction) resulted in an accidental release of the gas. Prove me wrong! This appears to be another bogus attempt of the Obama administration to help the Muslim Brotherhood decretely under the guise of punishing someone for a crime against humanity. Hey, there are and have been much more horrendous crimes. Remember Pol Pot in Cambodia. Reportedly 2 million were annihilated. That’s only one example among a dozen or more in our lifetime. Thanks for a good article, Jane.

  4. Slick Willy Clinton attacked the Christian Serbs (our allies in WWII) and aided the Muslims of Kosovo, who are major drug smugglers and allies of the Iran regime. George I and II attacked Saddam Hussein, who, although a brutal dictator, was (before we attacked him) not a threat to the US,and who served as a counter to the Iranian mullahs. Now, thanks to our leaders, Iraq is controlled by Shiites who are quite friendly with the Iranians.
And our current Unpresident, the Obaminable Hussein, has opened our borders to more and more Muslim immigrants, given Muslims special protections and privileges, put them in sensitive government posts, and and given them high security clearances. He supported the rise of Muslim Brotherhood extremists in Libya and Egypt, and deliberately let our Libyan ambassador and several other Americans be murdered. Now he is supporting al Qaida terrorists who are worse than the Syrian dictator they oppose.
And, most frightening of all,the presence of US and Russian military forces in one area and with opposing agendas risks escalation into a nuclear holocaust that can destroy us all.

  5. I am pro American and very hawkish on going after the bad guys, but Obama’s plan just doesn’t wash. If the military could openly speak they would be 100% against taking “Obama” action. This is a NO WIN situation and all we will be doing is throwing money down a rat hole and in the end we will have unleashed all the bad guys on our few friends in the region due to our inept comitment. We had better start our planning on how to neutralize the Iranian threat.

  6. Now that we have delayed taking any action for so long that the really bad guys, Hamas, Al Qaidah, Moslem Brotherhood, etc. are almost strong enough to take over, our best hope for a stable Middle East may be to hold our nose and support Assad. What a revolting place this administration has gotten us to.

  7. Am I to understand that 400 children were killed due to gassing, I admit it is horrific, now we go to war?
My question is we allow 1 million babies to be killed/aborted in one year in America and we do nothing!! What is the greater crime?
