Kill the Messenger!

In ancient times, it was not unusual to kill a messenger who brought bad news.  Many of the great prophets in the Bible suffered unspeakable treatment and even death.  Tradition has it that the prophet Isaiah was sawn in half.

These dedicated men of old were desperately trying to warn their countrymen to keep them from  a horrible fate but few listened, especially those who had the power to change things.  Most rulers simply surrounded themselves with “yes” men.    Little has changed.

King Obama, who had never run so much as a lemonade stand, has surrounded himself with tax cheats and economic “yes” men like Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, who admitted that he has “never had a real job.”  The same holds true for most other members of his royal court.  The notable exception is his chief of staff, Bill Daley, the token businessman — a sop to “diversity.” Continue reading “Kill the Messenger!”

The Free Lunch

If you still believe there is no such thing as a free lunch, you haven’t been to school lately.  On any given school day 31.6 million children sit down to a hot meal in the school cafeteria.  Sixty-three percent of those meals are free, or virtually free.

Furthermore, many of those same children show up for a free breakfast.  In addition, many schools have expanded their day to include help with home work and supervised play time and, what do you know?  It’s now time for dinner which calls for another free meal.   And, let us not forget free snacks.   If liberals get their way, there will be no need for children to go home anymore.  All that is left are school sleep-overs and, voila, the door to the “nanny state” slams shut.  Parents will be obsolete, except for the breeding and incubation process.   Continue reading “The Free Lunch”

What do We REALLY Need from Washington?

Solve the budget crisis?  We must, but we have been going about this all wrong.

I was struck by something New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said on Meet the Press last Sunday.   Bloomberg, the businessman, was advocating a clean sheet of paper approach.  According to Mr. B, we need to ask ourselves, “What do we need to keep this country going?”  Then, we need to do that efficiently.

What do we really need from Washington?  Think about it.  What can Big Brother do that the states, private enterprise, local charities and individuals can’t do for themselves?   Continue reading “What do We REALLY Need from Washington?”

Lance Armstrong: Brilliance on a Bike?

It takes one to know one.  Therefore, one must assume that professional cyclist Lance Armstrong is among the world’s “brightest” people.

Last week, Armstrong was the lead pony at the National Press Club for the pony and dog show put on by the American Cancer Society for the purpose of denouncing the Republican plan to cut the budget of the National Institutes of Health by a tiny 5.2 percent.

The dreaded 1995 bogeyman

Will there be a government shutdown?  If Senate Democrats and President Obama refuse to cooperate with the GOP-led House of Representatives and begin the process of cutting the government down to size before we reach the national debt limit, it’s possible.

The Democrats are betting that Republicans will blink and they are using the last, and what they believe to be the best weapon in their arsenal, the 1995 bogeyman, to scare them into abandoning their principled stand.

This boogeyman is without form or substance but in the years that followed those infamous government shutdowns, it has been known to strike fear into the hearts of the most dedicated fiscal conservative representatives on Capitol Hill.  Indeed, this creature has left many a congressman shaking in his or her boots or stilettoes. Media Fiddles while U.S. Burns

The unrest in Egypt is unsettling.   The possibility that the country could fall under the control of the Muslin Brotherhood would cause numerous dangerous problems.  The news media is in hyperdrive covering events in Cairo.  Unfortunately, what we are seeing on the nightly news and most cable outlets could be described as “all Egypt, all the time.”  As a result, the American public is being poorly served.

This is a seminal moment in the life of our country.  The actions taken by our elected representatives over the next few weeks are critical to our survival as a free and prosperous nation.

The Flimflam Artist Versus the Green Eye Shade

The response to the annual State of the Union address usually receives about as much attention as a quilting contest.

If the State of the Union address is a yawner, than the response is a sleeper: a deep, deep sleeper.

Not this year.   With the country’s economy stagnant and jobs as scarce as boyfriends for Ellen DeGeneres, we were ready for the unvarnished truth and that is exactly what we got from Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin.

New Congress: Does it have the Stomach for real Reform?

The new Congress began with something quite extraordinary, a reading of the U.S. Constitution.

One of the new rules imposed by the new GOP leaders is also quite extraordinary: The author of every bill must submit a “statement citing, as specifically as practicable, the power or powers granted to Congress in the Constitution to enact” it.

Just how many of our established federal programs or agencies are Constitutional? Continue reading “New Congress: Does it have the Stomach for real Reform?”

Cutting the Federal Government down to Size

Everyone has a plan to cut the government down to size, reduce the deficit —  and harder, much harder — eliminate the national debt.  Here’s mine. It’s simple, short and sweet.

Pass a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution and hand it off to the states for ratification. Anyone who fails to vote for this amendment is a moron and has no business serving in Congress. These people must be booted out of office, no ifs ands or buts. Individuals and families must live within their means and balance their budgets. Many states operate under balanced budget amendments. The necessary cuts must be made at the federal level until a balanced budget is reached. It’s the very least a citizen should expect of his or her elected representatives. Republicans, Can We Trust Them?

Republicans have gained control of the House of Representatives.  They now have the ability to  cut the federal budget down to size and put us on the road to fiscal stability.   This is their stated goal.

It doesn’t matter what kind of budget President Obama turns in.  In doesn’t matter what the Senate does.  Not a dime can be spent unless it is approved by the House of Representatives.

All the Republican-led House of Representatives has to do to control federal spending is put its collective foot down.

Bottom line: There can be no deficit spending next year, unless House Republican’s cave. Continue reading “Republicans, Can We Trust Them?”
