Three Land Mines for Republicans

Now that Republicans have won the election war, the real work begins:  the cleanup.  As with any war, this is the tedious part.  In these next two years there are no more glorious battles to be won, just a lot of grunt work.  As with any war, dealing with the aftermath is difficult.  It requires  hard work, focus, commitment and, make no mistake, it is dangerous.

One of the biggest obstacles is land mines.  These are not real land mines that can physically kill you but if the GOP doesn’t disarm them, they can kill the party’s chance for a victory in 2016.

The three biggest land mines standing between Republicans and victory in 2016 are:

The bad news? GOP’s same Spineless Leaders

So you think the fact that Republicans now control both houses of Congress there will be a rollback of Obama’s unpopular policies?  Guess again.

If you hit the snooze button for another two years, there will be a lot of whining and gnashing of teeth, but nothing important will get done.  Obamacare will still be the law of the land.  We will still be spending more than we take in and our immigration laws will still be a joke.

But wait a minute.  Isn’t this why the electorate gave the Republicans control of Congress?  What about the millions that were spent on the ads Repubican candidates were running touting these very things?  Aren’t these the very issues this election was supposed to be all about? Why Women Are Easy Prey for Liberal Democrats

With President Obama as welcome on the campaign trail as brownies at a meeting of Weight Watchers, and his policies as popular as Bach at a bowling alley, Democrats can be forgiven for rolling out the old “war on women” thing.  After all, it’s their ace in the hole, a proven winner when it comes to stirring up the electorate and getting out the vote.

“Those mean old Republicans want to take away your birth control, keep your wages below that of your male counterparts,” and did I hear, “deny your right to vote”?  Surely that must be in there somewhere.

Can’t blame them because they have been sewing these bad seeds for so long, it’s little wonder they are hoping that some still will bear fruit.

You really can’t blame women for falling for this gambit.  It’s not that women are dumb or that few take the time to research these charges that are thrown about like so much confetti before every election.  It’s just that most women are simply doing their best to survive in what is fast becoming a socialist, feminist utopia.

Real Immigration Reform: What’s Missing

We have a crisis on our souther border.  President Obama’s solution is to ask Congress for $3.8 billion dollars to process and care for these children who are illegally crossing into our country at an unprecedented rate.  This, of course, would only be a down payment because, if these children aren’t immediately returned to their home country, thousands more will be on their way.

Meanwhile, Obama is flying the children, many of whom are sick and diseased, around the country and dumping them in selected communities without so much as a warning to local officials.

This must stop, not only for the good of the country, but for the welfare of these children!  Obama’s policy and lack of enforcement are causing poor Central American parents to put their children into the care of smugglers in hopes of using them as anchors into the United States.  Sadly, many of these young people are mistreated and raped along the way!   Continue reading “Real Immigration Reform: What’s Missing”

Republicans more Fun than Democrats

In a recent New York magazine interview, Saturday Night Live boss Lorne Michaels revealed an interesting fact that gives us some insight as to why late night TV hosts are more likely to demean Republicans than Democrats.  “Republicans are easier for us than Democrats,” said Michaels.  “Democrats tend to take it personally; Republicans think it’s funny.”

In other words, Democrats have no sense of humor.  They take themselves much too seriously while Republicans can laugh at themselves. Continue reading “Republicans more Fun than Democrats”

What the Polls are REALLY telling us about the Shutdown

Woe to the GOP!  Beware of a government shutdown!  You will be blamed and if you persist in challenging the president.  You will lose control of the House of Representatives and kill any chance of regaining control of the Senate!

These “world will come to an end” warnings were issued by the Republican establishment and  often repeated by timid GOP elected representatives who fear — above all else — being thrown out of office and having to get real jobs like the rest of us poor saps who pay their salaries.

Who can blame them?

In the USA they helped to create, jobs are hard to come by and even harder to maintain.

Now, the party establishment and their echo chorus in Congress are gleefully pointing to the latest Washington Post/ ABC News poll that shows that 74 percent of the American people are unhappy with the way they are handling these negotiations and saying, “I told you so!”

Not so fast.  Continue reading “What the Polls are REALLY telling us about the Shutdown”

Cruzing for a Bruising

Some things are worth fighting for.  Ted Cruz believes that defunding Obamacare is one of those things and he is willing to use every means available to make that happen.

Some people say his 21-hour talkathon on the Senate floor was tantamount to trashing at windmills.  I say he accomplished his purpose.   He not only put that issue front and center, he exposed the leaders of his party as weak-kneed scaredy cats.

If you go into a fight you have to be willing to get your nose bloodied to win.  Has Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell ever put up his dukes?  He is too busy playing footsie with Democrat Leader Harry Reid to fight for anything.

Make no mistake:  McConnell has the power to make Reid agree to allow a clean up-or- down vote on the Continuing Resolution passed by the House that would fund the government sans Obamacare by getting 41 Republicans to back a filibuster.  However, the lily-livered McConnell and his lieutenant, John Cornyn, are working with Reid to strip the bill of that requirement. A Valentine for Michael

This is the time of year when we send expressions of love to those we hold dear: sweethearts, relatives and special friends.

I’m offering this Valentine to a friend I will not meet again this side of Heaven, a friend who served as a mentor to me and hundreds of conservatives in the trenches all across America, in Washington,D.C., and in the halls, offices and meeting rooms of Congress.

He help write legislation, make policy and shape public opinion, all in relative anonymity.        He was brilliant, thoughtful, sensitive and witty.   I can’t tell you how many powerful one-liners he’s given me over the years.  He couldn’t use them in the positions he held so he freely passed them on to those of us who write columns, host TV and radio programs and make speeches.

Michael Schwartz was a treasure.  Although separated by 2600 miles, when I needed insight on a pressing issue, advice on a column  or simply encouragement, I would pick up the phone and dial Michael.

As the country lost its moral underpinnings, as we headed off a financial cliff, as the electorate swooned over a sweet-talking, handsome, left-wing ideologue and I was tempted to throw up my hands and say, “What’s the use!” I would dial Michael.

For many conservatives like myself, Michael was our plumb line.  I used to tell him, “When you turn out the light in your office then, and only then, will I know it is time to pack it in.” Continue reading “A Valentine for Michael”

Twas the Night before Cliffmas

(With Apologies to Clement Clark Moore, Henry Livingston, Jr. or  Anonymous)

Twas the night before Cliffmas, when all through the House

Republicans were wondering if their leader was a man or a mouse;

The parameters for the budget talks had been set out with care,

In hopes that a compromise soon would be there.

The taxpayers were uneasy, not snug in their beds,

While visions of higher rates danced in their heads;

And mom with her checkbook and dad with the bills,

Had just settled down with a bottle of pills, Continue reading “Twas the Night before Cliffmas”

Morning in Amerika

It is morning in Amerika and the majority of people who voted to reelect Barack Obama president don’t even know it.  Everything appears to be normal but everything has changed.  The United States will not be the same.

I have never felt that all was lost after a single election as I do today.  The ship of state has been described as a battleship.  Its course cannot be changed abruptly.   A major correction is a long slow process.

Barack Obama didn’t begin the process that changed us from a democratic republic to a democratic socialist country but he will finish it, or at the very least, take us to the point of no return. Continue reading “Morning in Amerika”
