Just Say “NO Thank You” to IWD, Girl Scouts and Their Cookies

This is the week where real feminists separate from their radical counterparts.  For the uninformed, March 8, is officially International Women’s Day, but it is the catalyst for weeklong events held throughout this country and around the world.   Sounds harmless, if not downright inspiring to many unsuspecting women and girls who want to celebrate the right to be all that they can be.  Unfortunately, it comes with a lot of baggage you may not want for your daughter or yourself.https://www.americanprogress.org/events/2019/02/26/466672/international-womens-day/

This annual event was begun in 1909 in New York by the Socialist Party of America.  In 1917, it became a national holiday in Russia and was primarily celebrated by the socialist movement and communist countries until 1975 when it was embraced by the United Nations.

This years theme is “Balance for Better” aimed a building a “gender balanced world.”  What could possibility be wrong with that?  Nothing, unless it is artificially enforced and government-imposed on women who prefer not to be forced into jobs they don’t want or the full-time workforce at the expense of their families, which is the goal of many radical feminists.

Now for any movement to achieve worldwide success and sponsorship, it has to wrap itself in a cloak of righteousness, virtue and morality.   IWD achieved that goal, in-part, by partnering with WAGGS, the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts.  https://www.internationalwomensday.com/WAGGGS

It is no small coincidence that the Girl Scouts are out in force this month selling cookies on street corners, in front of grocery stores and other places of business.   For many years, I would buy at least one box from every girl I met, even if I had a dozen or more boxes at home.

The Girl Scouts were an important part of my formative years and I sold hundreds of boxes of these cookies myself, so I considered it payback, playing it forward so to speak.  Not anymore.

Today’s Girl Scouts are a far cry from those of my youth which trained us to put God and country before everything else.   Today, God in the Girl Scout promise has an asterisk, meaning the great I AM and His moral absolutes can be replaced by anything, including oneself.

Country, also, has taken a backseat.  The emphasis is on global citizenship, which is fine unless you stop to consider that most of the world is not free and the world’s values are often at odds with our own.

It is little wonder that the Girl Scouts have taken a sharp left turn and can be found marching for abortion rights, gun control and other radical feminist events like International Women’s Day.

The IWD website encourages participants to donate to charities that promote their causes.

“No matter which feminist cause speaks to your heart, there is an organization that will resonate with you. This list encompasses programs fighting for reproductive rights, equal protection under the law, educational opportunities, political opportunities…”

The recommended charities include the National Organization of Women, Center for Reproductive Rights, Planned Parenthood and Ultra Violet, which promotes the election of progressive (that is the new term for ultra liberal) women. https://www.romper.com/p/10-things-to-do-for-international-womens-day-that-make-it-easy-for-you-to-make-a-difference-15967346

In fact, the Girl Scouts are celebrating the victory won by their alums in the 2018 midterms on its website beginning with their star, Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, who attributes much of her success to what she learned as part of this organization.  http://blog.girlscouts.org/2018/12/2018-year-of-girl-agenda.htmlhttp://blog.girlscouts.org/2018/12/2018-year-of-girl-agenda.html   Now Girl Scout alums make up 72 percent of female senators and 60 percent of the women in the 116th Congress.  Although the website tries to strike a bipartisan tone it is no accident that, among this year’s freshmen, Carol Miller is the only Republican and she is much older, 68, than the rest. http://blog.girlscouts.org/2018/11/the-girl-scout-alums-who-broke-barriers.html   Her training in scouting was well before the feminist takeover that occurred in 1970.

When feminist Betty Friedan was put on the national governing board the Girl Scouts began purging their materials of all positive references to homemakers. Partnerships with Planned Parenthood followed and the Girl Scouts adopted the new global agenda.

Fortunately, there is now a good scouting alternative, the American Heritage Girls. http://americanheritagegirls.org

To be sure, there are many fine people still engaged in Girl Scouting at the local level.   Unfortunately, local troops have no say in national policy and very little of that cookie money stays with the troop.http://mygirlscoutcouncil.com/index.html

So before you decide to embrace an International Women’s Day celebration or buy the cookies ask yourself, “Will the country be better off with more representatives like the young socialist  Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez?

If not, it’s a good time to start your diet.

Sample letter to hand to Girl Scout Leaders at cookie tables

March  2019

Dear Girl Scout Leader:

Thank you for being involved in the important process of training our next generation.  I am sorry that I cannot buy the cookies but I am interested in supporting your troop.

In fact I am willing to donate  $_____  to you troop to help you transition to American Heritage Girls, which was begun in 1995 by dedicated Girl Scout leaders like yourself who were disturbed by the changes that had taken place in the national organization and discovered there was no way to change the organization from within.

American Heritage Girls is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the mission of building women of integrity through service to God, family, community and country.   Much like the original mission of the Girl Scouts. The organization offers badge programs, service projects, girl leadership opportunities, and outdoor experiences to its members. It serves as a catalyst for building young women of integrity and faith. It also broadens girls social development through extra-curricular activities. This program of character building has successfully served thousands of girls since its inception and will continue to do so long into the 21st century.

AHG now has troops in all 50 states and 15 countries.   You can read more about it at americanheritagegirls.org.  As a leader, I am sure that you are aware that, over the years, the values promoted by the Girl Scouts have changed.  The emphasis on “God and Country” has been replaced by a self-actualized global agenda.   In fact, there is an asterisk by God in the promise making the great I AM optional.

In addition, the links to pro-abortion groups and inappropriate anything-goes-as-long-as-it-goes -with-a-condom sexual content is troubling.  If you would like to followup go to http://www.mygirlscoutcouncil.com for the direct links to Girl Scout material.

I know change is difficult to contemplate, but it is easier than you think.  In fact, many of the badges that the girls have earned in the past may be transferable.

I hope you will take me up on my offer to help.  My cell phone is _________.  When you call me with a desire to switch to AHG my check will be forthcoming. My best wishes for a brighter tomorrow.

Sincerely,

  1. Realistic question: The Girl Scouts organization was apart of many wonderful years, during your youth. Correct?

I am reading your opinion and also very selective about where my children decide to involve themselves.

Based on your blog post above, what/where/who/how/how many active Girl
Scouts did you personally interview to justify this very serious accusation?

Sincerely, I am asking you, Jane, on behalf of myself, and other mothers, who are considering enrollment in the GS.
As grown adults, we understand agendas and also the ability to register in Troops that reflect our morals.
We read your blog as a warning to all of us that the organization of Girl Scouts is very unsafe for our young girls?
Please clear this up—very concerned. Thank You!

    1. Gina,

Yes, I was a Girl Scout for many years. However, as I stated, it is a far cry from what it was in my youth. I have written many columns on this over the years. I suggest you click on the Girl Scout topic and bring up my past articles. If you want your girls to grow up to embrace radicle feminism then go ahead and enroll them in a local troop. If not seek another alternative. Simply follow the last two links in my column to find out more. FYI: American Heritage Girls was founded by former Girl Scout and area leaders who realized there was no way to change national policy. American Heritage Girls is now in all 50 states and 15 countries.

      1. Jane, this article breaks my heart that so much negative hate exists in your words and almost downright discriminatory. While I can tell your political views smear your narrow mindedness into a blind and one sided view, you are welcome to it but must also take the criticism for your nasty propaganda as well. I’m an attack on a fellow woman who champions for women’s rights among others, women like her are the reason you even get to have a voice on a website like this. I guess supporting other women as well as a great organization that promotes a healthy social and skill building organization like Girl Scouts of America isn’t important to you. Let’s push women back to being barefoot and pregnant as the popular conservative view of women would like to reestablished

    2. First Class Girl Scout here. In every troop and every camp I went to, the Girl Scouts were inclusive of everyone. We did not have any religious agenda, and Our troop leaders and camp counselors seemed to think that everybody had something positive to contribute to our world. We talked about Girl Scouts and Girl Guides from many different cultures and countries, not just the United States. We learned how to set goals and make plans and follow those plans through to the end, whether that was a homemaker career or a career outside of the home. We learned about how to apply for colleges, how to sell cookies and calendars and be OK with getting a no. Even in the 70s, we had disabled people at Girl Scout camp and everybody helped out. I don’t know where Jane was in a troop or when, But if it is a “radical feminist organization” that teaches you to think for yourself, I could not be prouder of the Girl Scouts for doing just that.

  2. Well it was kind of you to pepper the pre-typed letters with grammatical errors and typos so the Girl Scout leaders can teach critical thinking, analytical dissection of privilege, how to recognize manipulation, and that age does not always equal wisdom! “I’ll give you money but only if you leave the Girl Scouts and sign up for a specific Christian based organization”? You can’t stop progress, Jane. Please leave these poor children alone to participate in the organizations and activities that they choose without having your antiquated views of “a woman’s place” shoved down their throats. Your generation is done, Jane. You’ve had your time, you really made a mess for the rest of us to clean up, so thanks but no thanks and don’t let the door hit you on the way out. For the record, your country could use MANY more women like AOC.

  3. This is what Trumpsters have become? You attack a charitable organization because a Democrat said she was helped by it? Do you have any idea what the Girl Scouts do for girls around the world, the opportunities they provide? Before you strike out publicly, maybe you should volunteer with a troop for a couple of months. It might enlighten you. I was a GS Leader for 9 years, and i saw what being a part of Girls Scouts can do for girls. The leaders of these troops give endless hours as volunteers because they know how valuable it is. Everything in the world doesn’t have to be political! i never thought i would see Republicans tearing down an organization that teaches young women positive and moral goals, service to their community and personal pride and responsibility. You have all lost your moral compass.

  4. You are a pitiful old wretch past your usefulness if you ever had any. What we need is less of you, more of the ideas and energy of people like AOC. We need more socialism, less religion and resistance to the white nationalist crusaders.

  7. You have had a marginal career at best. You have now embarrassed not the only the magazine but also yourself. There is a time in every person’s life where they need to realize that its time to retire and move on with their golden years. In your case, its past that time, actually you have passed it a very long time ago and now have entered a world of irrelevance and insanity. I am sure the magazine will make this decision for you due to the thousands of magazines and UN-subscribers that will be a result of this article. Instead of being someone young women can aspire to be like they now will consider you a footnote on a conservative society that is so far unhinged that history will judge you very harshly. Good luck in your forthcoming retirement, maybe FOX news gains a new correspondent?

  9. Nothing like attacking the messenger when they don’t like the message. If the left wants to defend AOC— who is so far in over her head— so be it. Keep enlightening the people, Jane. Don’t let the malcontents hinder your voice.

      1. Although I supported the Girls Scouts and in fact was the cookie chairman for my daughter’s troop for eons, I do not like the political agenda that the Scouts have now adopted. From your posts it is obvious that you can’t see the logic of leaving an organization that has been taken over by moral and political bias. But to suggest that Jane should retire because you disagree with her perspective— when all sides of an issue are critically important— makes, as you say, “ZERO sense.”

  10. the “feminist takeover” of the Girl Scouts ? How about the realization that women and girls are not considered hosts or homemakers ?
This is conservative clap-trap and just wanted to comment that this sort of thinking is over with – done…AOC and the other new Congressional representatives are the vanguard – it will only get more radical.

    Have a nice bitter life

  11. Dolores…..you must be either as delusional as Jane or just plain dumb. To not support the girl scouts of today for you believing that Christian beliefs are above all others and anything other religion is not worth being supported. There are other religions that are in America and you have no heaven or hell to put anyone into by your judgement. But you sound just like Donald Trump, Alex Jones, Sean Hannity and all the right wing nut jobs in believing there is some “deep state” running around America. Personally I think those 3 and people like you and Jane are ripping America apart. Instead of trying to find ways to unite people you are trying to find ways to rip us apart….starting with the Girl Scouts. No need to write back because a) I wont becoming back to read your garbage and b) you really need to open your mind and consider there are other people on this planet other than old white people.

  12. Wow, lots of “tolerant” lefties here….I can feel the hate in their comments. Jane, I want to thank you for this excellent post. You speak the truth, and deal with the issue fairly. I was a Girl Scout (through Cadettes) in my youth, and led a Junior troop years later when one of my daughters was a Girl Scout. Today’s GS is NOTHING like it once was. I am saddened by what it has become. Thank you for telling the truth. God bless you and your work. Please don’t retire as one ignoramus insisted; you are needed!

  13. I also agree with Barb. The amount of hatred and ignorance shown by the majority of these posts is not only staggering but dreadfully frightening. Our freedoms come from our Christian heritage and the ignorance of that fact so clearly is shown by these nutcase posters. To all of you to whom I’m addressing this post, do yourself a BIG favor and learn about our nation’s founding. Read M. Stanton Evans book, The Theme is Freedom, documented so thoroughly that the facts are absolutely irrefutable, and Evans clearly shows that Christianity is our foundation. Once you have read and understood the content, you will see how you have been misled by teaching and the general cultural knowledge that is totally backward when it comes to our founding, War of Independence from England, and the historical basis dating back about 2,000 years. Oh, to finally be enlightened, knowing the truth will make you an unshakable patriot.
