What Does It Mean to be Truly Thankful?

What does it mean to be truly thankful? It is an attitude of gratitude toward our Maker.

Gratitude is not passive. It is more than offering up a traditional prayer before you sit down to a feast, followed by an afternoon of watching football in front of the television. It is an acknowledgment that all that we have, our very existence, is a gift from God – a God who made man in His image in order to have communion with him.

Communion is more than a conversation. It is a relationship. A relationship requires communication to be sure, but have you ever tried to have communion with a rock? Continue reading “What Does It Mean to be Truly Thankful?”

California Parents Blindsided

Quick – raise your hand if you think the state can do a better job of protecting your children than you can.

No parent in his or her right mind would answer “yes” to a question like that.

However, that was the way over 52 percent of California voters answered that question in Tuesday’s special election. They nixed Proposition 73, a constitutional amendment that would have given parents back their right to be notified before one of their children is given an abortion – a right that was taken away from them by activist judges on the state supreme court. Let the Rumble Begin

President Bush set the stage for a fight when he nominated Samuel A. Alito to the Supreme Court. But let’s be clear about this one thing: This is a fight conservatives have been avoiding for years.

At stake is whether Supreme Court justices should interpret the Constitution or make law according to their own political whims.

The latter scenario should be scary to both liberals and conservatives. It is about giving up the rights carefully enumerated in the Constitution to five or more political ideologues, unaccountable to no one and reducing our elected representatives to mere set dressing.

It is not a big secret as to why the extreme left has been pushing us in that direction. It was the only way these folks could hope to push their unpopular ideas down our throats. Unfortunately, many on the right seem content to push us in the same direction. In short, we have lost our way. Continue reading “Let the Rumble Begin”

They Think We Are a Bunch of Dummies

They think we’re a bunch of dummies! How else can you explain some of the rhetoric coming out of the White House and Congress?

Case in point was an answer Scott McClellan, the president’s mouthpiece, gave WorldNetDaily’s Les Kinsolving last week. Kinsolving asked if Bush is concerned that he is alienating his conservative base by increasing the federal budget deficit and not vetoing a single piece of legislation. Needed: Religious Conservatives with Backbone

The revolt in the Republican ranks over the nomination of Harriett Miers to the Supreme Court is extremely significant. For the first time since George W. Bush was elected president, the leading conservative watchdog groups, even many from the religious right, are showing some backbone and are not blindly walking the plank for this man.

However, there is another revolt within conservative ranks that finally has caught fire. You must fan these flames because it is equally as important as a seat on the Supreme Court. Continue reading “Needed: Religious Conservatives with Backbone”

My biggest problem with Hariett Miers

My biggest problem with Harriet Miers is the same as it was for John Roberts, the new chief justice of the Supreme Court. It is the same as it has been for President Bush. It is an issue from which pro-family leaders and leaders of the religious right – the groups that got out the votes that put Bush over the top in the last two presidential elections – have shied away. It is the advancement of gay rights.

Please, understand. I do not care what someone does behind closed doors with their sex life (as long as it does not include a minor). That is just too much information. I am concerned, however, when a behavior – any behavior – gives the person practicing that behavior access to my hard-earned tax dollars or special privileges under the law. The Issue that Won’t Go Wway

Have you ever wondered why abortion remains the most controversial issue in America today? It’s been over three decades since Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that made abortion legal in all 50 states, for any reason, through all nine months of a woman’s pregnancy, yet it remains unsettled. Why else would this issue now be the “litmus test” for appointments to our highest court?

Abortion is both a political issue and a moral issue. However, many politicians want it treated only as a religious issue and many religious leaders won’t touch it because it is political. It has become a Catch-22, a highly controversial, highly visible stepchild. Continue reading “The Issue that Won’t Go Wway”

The Good Guy Won!

Are you convinced that all candidates running for political office are the same?

Do you see “politics” as just another career choice, where candidates work their way up the ladder and — once elected to the U.S. House of Representatives or the U.S. Senate — use their power, influence and our tax dollars to keep their jobs for life?

Are you annoyed that the party establishment hand-picks the candidates to fill the important posts, then lays out the bread crumbs for the rest of us to dutifully follow to the polls?

Just when you thought there was no way that an honest, selfless citizen could hack his way into the political hierarchy, along comes a man who breaks all those unwritten rules and comes out on top. Continue reading “The Good Guy Won!”

The Race the Republican Establishment Is willing to Lose

He’s got the charisma and moral clarity of Ronald Reagan, the honesty of Abe Lincoln and the mental toughness of Jesse Helms.  In Oklahoma, the polls show he is the only man who can beat Democrat Brad Carson for the Senate seat being vacated by Don Nickles, but the party establishment wants him to lose.

Tom Coburn is not a household word, despite the fact that this family physician from Muskogee was one of the most effective and feared men to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives in recent years.  That’s because Dr. Coburn’s leadership was behind the scenes.

Modern-day Washington is set up to reward career politicians with leadership posts and committee chairmanships and Coburn was no modern-day legislator.  He was a throwback to an earlier time when men went to Washington to serve, not to be served.
