Where are the Patriots Among the Dreamers? (We need to See them)

Monday was the latest ugly demonstration by the so-called “Dreamers,” the young people who were supposedly brought here by their illegal parents as small children and, we are told, know no other country.  This one was staged to mark the passing of the deadline from President Trump to end the illegal DACA program that Obama created with a stroke of his pen.

Two activist federal judges have issued injunctions blocking his order.   Now we must wait for the program to wind its way up the slow as molasses judicial system to the Supreme Court.  This is cruel and completely unnecessary as President Trump offered a compromise to, not only allow those DACA recipients to stay, but untold numbers of other illegal young people, even those who snuck in on their own claiming to be teenagers.   Additionally, Trump is offering to give them a way to become full-fledged U.S. citizens with all its benefits and privileges, to boot.  Continue reading “Where are the Patriots Among the Dreamers? Blame the ACLU

President Trump has argued, correctly, that Nikolas Cruz should have been reported and that this information should have prevented him from buying a gun as expressed in this tweet.

“So many signs that the Florida shooter was mentally disturbed, even expelled from school for bad and erratic behavior. Neighbors and classmates knew he was a big problem. Must always report such instances to authorities, again and again.

Trump’s critics rightfully point out that he signed a law that repealed an Obama regulation that would have added an additional 75,000 people who suffer from mental illness to the national background data check.  No doubt Trump would like to take that back.

The rule that was repealed specifically required that the Social Security Administration add people who have been deemed incapable of managing their financial affairs to that list.  That would include many who receive disability payments due to mental illness.   This would not have prevented Nikolas Cruz from obtaining all his guns, but it would have been a small step in the right direction.

The measure was part of a larger group of Obama rules that were reasonably repealed by Congress shortly after Trump took office.  Yes, the repeal of the gun measure was supported by the NRA but another organization that has been largely left out of this discussion, the ACLU, was also to blame.

In a letter to Congress, the ACLU wrote:  “We oppose this rule because it advances and reinforces the harmful stereotype that people with mental disabilities, a vast and diverse group of citizens, are violent,” the letter says. “There is no data to support a connection between the need for a representative payee to manage one’s Social Security disability benefits and a propensity toward gun violence.”

Obviously, if you can’t manage your money you shouldn’t be expected to manage a gun.  Please!  More obvious is the fact that someone who is getting SSI disability payments due to a mental illness should not have access to guns.

Let us not forget that in the 70s and 80s the ACLU was at the forefront of patient’s rights legislation and court cases that emptied our mental institutions.  These cases raised the bar significantly for anyone to be committed.   The courts ultimately ruled that a finding of mental illness alone was not enough to justify a state’s locking a person up against his will and keeping him indefinitely in simple custodial confinement if such persons are dangerous to no one and can live safely in freedom.

What does living safely in freedom mean?  Today, for the most part, that means living on the streets.  Why?  Because most of the mentally ill don’t think they are mentally ill.   Once out they refuse their meds and don’t go for treatment.  When that happens many do become dangerous and their heartbroken families are simply afraid to keep them or take them in.  Research suggests that individuals with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are responsible for approximately 10 percent of all homicides in the United States.  For mass killings, the percentage is approximately 33 percent. http://www.treatmentadvocacycenter.org/evidence-and-research/learn-more-about/3627

Too often families are counseled to avoid having a child classified as mentally ill and schools try to keep these children in their system.  Then, once that child becomes an adult, the school and the family lose control unless the now mentally ill adult voluntarily gives a parent or another adult the responsibility for his or her custody.  We now know that Nikolas Cruz refused to let the school district continue providing him with the mental health services he had been receiving after he turned 18.  These cases go unreported.

It’s an urban legend that we have insane people living on the streets because Ronald Reagan closed the mental hospitals.  Most mental hospitals were closed simply because they no longer had any patients.  Sadly, liberal organizations like the ACLU that worked to get all these mental patients released, largely abandoned society’s most vulnerable.

Many of the mental health workers who worked toward this end have admitted their mistake.  Many also have admitted their over reliance on drugs.  Now these drugs are part of the larger problem of those who shoot up schools or a workplace.

If you are on psychotropic drugs you cannot join the military, pilot a plane and — in some cases — even drive a car.  It makes sense that people on these drugs should be ineligible to buy guns unless re-evaluated.

Politicians, the NRA and the ACLU need to accept this.   My guess is the first two will come around.  The ACLU is perhaps the bigger culprit and, so far, has escaped the consternation of the general public.

GOP Needs a New Mascot

The Republican Party needs a new mascot.  The elephant is no longer appropriate.  An elephant is a proud, strong animal.  It represents strength, wisdom, loyalty, stamina and leadership.   Clearly, after last week’s cave-in to Democrats in order to achieve a long-term spending bill and avoid the possibility of another government shutdown, none of those traits apply to a party that controls both houses of Congress and the White House.

This little compromise, which added another $300 billion to the budget over the next two years, was a complete disaster for a country that is up to its eyeballs in debt and a president that was elected promising to drain the swamp.  Earth to the president:  The swamp feeds on tax dollars.  This deal the GOP is celebrating just flooded the place and added to the stench.   Continue reading “GOP Needs a New Mascot”

No Thank You Obama

So now we know why Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer  looked as if they were sucking on lemons during President Trump’s State of the Union address.  They wanted him to thank Obama for all the good economic news he was touting.

That’s why members of the Congressional (Democrat) Black Caucus could not bring themselves to cheer when Trump announced that the black unemployment rate was now the lowest in the history of our nation.

Most forget that the financial crisis that occurred from the housing bubble in 2008 was ended before Obama took office.  The recession that followed was made worse by his pathetic attempt to micromanage the economy.  This led to the nation’s weakest economic recovery in modern history.   And let us not forget the $800 billion dollars Obama fleeced out of we the taxpayers for those shovel-ready jobs.   I think it is safe to say that if that $800 billion had been spend as advertised, we would not have an infrastructure problem now.  In fact, many of our roads and bridges would be paved with gold.   Continue reading “No Thank You Obama”

Dreamers, Screamers and Schemers

President Trump’s latest immigration offer is baffling to say the least.  After winning a great victory over Democrats in their short-lived government shutdown, Trump appears to have caved.

Despite what the perpetual white-flag-waving Mitch McConnell said about the president’s demands for a DACA deal being unclear, they were understood by most clear-thinking Americans:  amnesty for some 800,000 DACA young people in exchange for funding the border wall, and an end to chain migration and the visa lottery.  All these things were enormously popular with Americans all across the political spectrum, Democrats in Congress excluded who are united on only one thing:  their opposition to Trump.

So why, oh why, did Trump more than double his original offer to include, not only the DACA recipients, but another million or so who couldn’t qualify or wouldn’t bother to qualify for DACA.  Furthermore, he is offering not simple amnesty: the right to stay, live and work in the greatest country on earth, but citizenship to boot.   Continue reading “Dreamers, Screamers and Schemers”

March for Life vs. Women’s March: A Study in Contrasts

Last weekend saw tens of thousands flock to Washinton, DC and major cities throughout the United States to exercise a basic right of individuals in a free society:  The right to rally and march in support of a cause:  One side gathered to support life; the other side gathered to support the right to take the life of the most vulnerable among us, a child in the womb.

Forty-five years after the Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade, the two sides show up on or near the anniversary of arguably the most controversial decision ever handed down by the nation’s highest court, a decision that now hangs by a legal thread.

However, for the last two years, the pro-abortion side has morphed into an anti-Trump protest. Homosexuals, transexuals, illegal immigrants, witches, prostitutes, socialists filled the streets along with women who were not shy about expressing their distaste for the current occupant of the White House.

The marches were a study in contrasts:  One march was angry, loud, disrespectful and crude.  The other peaceful, respectful and at times even joyful.   Continue reading “March for Life vs. Women’s March: A Study in Contrasts”

Trump’s Real Mistakes in the Immigration Debate (Hint: It Wasn’t His Choice of Words

Let’s get serious about the mistakes Donald Trump made last Thursday in the sit-down with six liberal senators, three Democrats: Durbin (IL) Bennet (CO) and Menendez (NJ) and three Republicans:  Graham (SC), Flake (AZ) and Gardiner (CO).   It was not his choice of words.  It was that he trusted that those involved were actually serious about making a deal for the  amnesty of 800,000 young people (some now in their 30s though we have no absolute proof of age) who claim to have been brought here by their illegal parents as minors.

The meeting was a farce.  If these six lawmakers were truly concerned about the DACA young people, many of whom were so young when they arrived they know no other country, then they would have offered a plan that not only dotted the i’s and crossed the t’s, but also included what the president demanded in return.  His Continue reading “Trump’s Real Mistakes in the Immigration Debate (Hint: It Wasn’t His Choice of Words”

Are Dreamers not Worth $18 Billion to Democrats?

How nice of the Democrats and their pro-amnesty Republican friends!  They want to help President Trump sell what they hope will be his surrender on the border wall to his supporters and the overwhelming majority of Americans who want illegal immigration stopped once and for all.  Their solution to his “problem,” they claim, can be found in how he defines the word “wall.”

President Clinton tried that with the word “is.”   Continue reading “Are Dreamers not Worth $18 Billion to Democrats?”

Miss America — The Latest Trump Bashing Spectacle (Whatever Happened to World Peace?)

As hurricane Irma ripped into Florida, Miss America’s finalists were bated into bashing President Trump. While it is too early to assess the damage, my guess is the lasting effects on this historic piece of Americana will linger long after Florida has recovered and they will not be good.

The grand finale of the iconic Miss America Pageant always has been questions thrown at the finalists.  It has been the undoing of many young women in a contest where poise is as important as one’s overall beauty and talent.   The objective was to answer the question confidently without saying anything too controversial or dumb.   Continue reading “Miss America — The Latest Trump Bashing Spectacle (Whatever Happened to World Peace?)”

No Honks for DACA

Traveling through downtown Phoenix last week, a city at the heart of the illegal immigration issue, I passed a small group of protesters carrying signs, “Honk if you support DACA.”

For the uninitiated that is Obama’s unconstitutional amnesty for young people illegally brought into this country by their parents.  We are talking up to 30-year-old children here. Continue reading “No Honks for DACA”
