The Price of Freedom

July 4 is the birthday of our nation.  It is the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the document by which the American colonies declared their independence from British rule, which had become burdensome if not tyrannical.

This was, however, not an end but the beginning of a struggle for freedom that would last for more than seven years and cost many of the brave men who signed that document their comfortable homes, their land, their fortune, their children and — for some — their very lives. 

The men who met in Philadelphia that fateful day in 1776  to sign that document were not poor, malcontent scalawags.  These were men of means who risk everything to give us this nation where 

“all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights …”

It is important to remember that, while these men were declaring their independence from Great Britain, they were also declaring their dependence on the God who created us.  And in case that was not clear enough in this declaration of rights, they closed the document in such a way that it could not be missed.

“And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred honor.”

The years that followed were difficult and victory would have been impossible without the direct intervention of the hand of God.  Those who doubt this simply do not know their history.  How else could a rag-tag army of colonists defeat the powerful British?  The miracles that followed are too numerous to mention such as the  blinding fog that allowed Washington’s men to escape from Brooklyn or just the right amount of snow and thaw on the icy Delaware River that paved the way for  — not one  — but three miraculous crossings. What the VRA Decision Portents for Roe v Wade

The Supreme Court’s common sense decision on the Voting Rights Act could have far-reaching implications if the same logic is applied to Roe v Wade, the decision that effectively made abortion on demand through the full nine months of pregnancy the law of the land.

On Tuesday, in Shelby County v Holder, the high court struck down a key section of the act which had subjected the laws pertaining to elections in nine states and other local jurisdictions to intense scrutiny by the Justice Department.

At issue was Section 4 of the act, which applies a decades-old formula to decide which states and counties had histories of discrimination.

The preclearance provisions were considered so drastic that, when Congress enacted them in 1965, they were supposed to be temporary.  However, discrimination laws have become so sacrosanct that when lawmakers renewed these provisions (the last time was in 2006) they had no stomach for revising the formula.

In writing the majority opinion, Chief Justice John Roberts found it unconstitutional that states be judged by what was known to be true 40 years ago.

Please Spy on Me

As a U. S. citizen, I hope my government is spying on me if . . .

  • I am phoned by known or suspected terrorists.
  • I visit bomb making sites on the internet.
  • I make contact with members of al Qaeda 
  • I attend a radical mosque.
  • I order the makings for a suicide vest.
  • I have large amounts of unexplained cash funneled into my bank account.
  • I frequent jihadist websites.

How to Secure the Border

How can we secure our border with Mexico?  The answer is simple:  Secure the border!

We don’t need amnesty or work verification or bingo or pink elephants or anything else to secure the border.   All we need is the will to do it.

The so-called “comprehensive” immigration reform bill now before Congress is an example of the oldest con game in Washington which goes on decade after decade.  Our representatives tell us,  “Give us what we want and then we promise we will give you what you want.  Trust us.”   Somehow, it never quite works out  for “we the people.”   Continue reading “How to Secure the Border”

The “Core” Problem in Education

One of the biggest mistakes of President Ronald Reagan was his failure to deliver on a promise to abolish the federal Department of Education.  

When you hear someone mention that today, he or she is regarded as a complete nincompoop, who has little regard for children.

The Bullies Won

I do not hate anyone. (It seems silly to have to preface my remarks with that statement but these are strange times.)  I do hate bad behavior.  That includes lying, name-calling, intimidation and bullying which have become hallmarks of gay rights activists.

Last week, the Boy Scouts of America abandoned the time-honored principles enshrined in the oath and laws and gave in to these bullies when leadership skillfully manipulated its voting delegates to approve a resolution to admit openly gay Scouts into its ranks.  

The oath includes a “duty to God” and a pledge to keep oneself “morally straight.”  The laws proclaim that a Scout is — among other things — obedient, reverent, loyal and brave.  The BSA leadership is none of the above.  Therefore, the Scouts’ ability to lead young boys to become responsible God-fearing young men with these qualities has been hopelessly compromised.  

Adolf Hitler introduced the principle of winning the battle of the mind with the “Big Lie.” in his book “Mein Kampf.”

Obama’s Fourth Scandal

Barack Obama is fighting for his political life, embroiled in three scandals: the criminal use of the IRS, using the Justice Department to spy on reporters and the cover-up of the attack in Benghazi.

There is a fourth scandal that is equally serious but is not being addressed because this cover-up involves both the administration and Congress, Democrats and Republicans.

Last week, the Pentagon released a report on the soaring number of sexual assaults in the military. These crimes have increased a whopping 129 percent since 2004. The confidential portion of this report indicates that some 26,000 members of our armed forces were sexual assaulted last year alone. However, only 3,347 of these assaults were reported. Boy Scouts follow Girl Scouts Downhill (Last of a Three-Part Series)

There is a reason that the Boy Scouts of America have not partnered with the Girl Scouts USA.  The two organizations would appear to be natural affiliates but at their core, they are now miles apart.  That may be about to change.   

The issue that has divided them are the principles on which the two organizations were founded:  A belief in God and a pledge to abide by the moral truths that are revealed in His Word.  

  •  In the 70’s, the Girl Scouts put feminist icon Betty Friedan on its national governing board. It wasn’t long before the Girl Scouts began purging its materials of all positive references to homemakers.
  •  In 1980, the organizations changed its policy on homosexuality and welcomed lesbians as scouts and troop leaders.
  • In 1993, the Girl Scouts took aim at the Creator himself, making God an option by inserting an asterisk by the word “God” in the Promise.  

Due to public outrage and loss of enrollment, that asterisk was removed from the latest Girl Scout Handbook.  Don’t be fooled.  Instead, girls are simply being instructed that when reciting the Promise they are “free to substitute their own wording for God’”  http://www.girlscoutshs.org/sensitiveissuesfaqs.  In other words, a girl is free to pledge to do her duty to herself as any good atheist would.   Continue reading “Boy Scouts follow Girl Scouts Downhill (Last of a Three-Part Series)”

Boy Scouts: Blowin’ in the Wind of “Change” (2nd of a 3-Part Series)

Dealing with a sticky issue and want to pass the buck?  The timeworn established practice is to conduct a study.  That is how the Executive Committee responsible for governing the Boy Scouts of America decided to deal with the issue of opening its ranks to homosexuals.

The results of this “study” led to a proposal that will be presented to roughly 1400 voting members of its National Council on May 24.  It is a compromise that will please no one: admit homosexual youth but keep the ban in place that prevents openly gay adults from becoming Scout leaders.

Boy Scouts want to “Split the Baby” (Part One in a Series)

King Solomon was considered one of the wisest men in the world.  According to the Bible, when two women came before him fighting over a baby, both claiming to be its mother, Solomon ordered that the child be cut in half with a sword.  One woman was perfectly satisfied with his decision, but when the other offered to give up the child in order to save him, Solomon knew who the real mother was and gave the child to her.

The leadership of the Boy Scouts of America has proposed a similar arrangement in the effort to satisfy its members, volunteers and donors over the issue of admitting open homosexuals to its ranks.

The proposal, which will be voted on May 24, is to admit homosexual young people into scouting, while keeping the ban in place that prevents homosexuals from serving as staff or adult leaders.  This proposal satisfies no one and, if it goes through, will mean the death of scouting as we know it.   Continue reading “Boy Scouts want to “Split the Baby” (Part One in a Series)”
