Supporting Democracy — Only when it suits Us

The U.S. has gone halfway around the world to spread democracy.  Too bad, we don’t practice what we preach a little closer to home.

It is unconscionable that freedom loving Americans could be standing toe to toe with Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez and Cuba’s Castro brothers in the effort to undermine the people of Honduras as they fight to keep their country free.

It is incredulous that we are insisting that this poor country reinstate Manuel Zelaya, who was forcibly removed from power on June 29, after he attempted to subvert the constitution and hold a referendum to make himself president for life. The Tea Party Challenge

Last Saturday, upwards of 200,000 people left the comfort of their homes to come to Washington, to make a statement to their elected representatives:

“We want you to shrink the size of our bloated government.  We don’t want it increased, not for health care, the environment, education, art, farmers, saving the children, world peace or a thousand and one other excuses that politicians have used over the last century to increase the size of the federal government to the point that it has crippled the free market and the ability of taxpayers to provide for themselves.

“In other words, we want you to do less, not more!” Continue reading “The Tea Party Challenge”

Forget the Swamp: Drain the Cesspool in New York!

On Tuesday, President Obama encouraged school children to “wash their hands.”   Now he should tell Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi to follow his example and do the same.

The president took advantage of the long Labor Day weekend to wash his hands of his most embarrassing political appointment, Green Czar Van Jones.  Jones supposedly made the decision to resign on his own, but he was forced to walk the plank.   Technically, he didn’t have to jump.  He could have stayed on his perch and be run through with a sword – the sword or swim with the sharks.  Jones chose to swim.

Now it’s Pelosi’s turn to feed one of her own to the sharks, New York Congressman Charlie Rangel.  If she doesn’t, her promise to “drain the swamp” will be turned into a campaign ad that can and should be used to drain Congress of every Democrat in leadership.  Continue reading “Forget the Swamp: Drain the Cesspool in New York!”

“Cash for Clunkers” RIP

The Cash for Clunkers program has come and gone and if you think RIP stands for Rest in Peace, think again.  It’s just plain old “rip” as in rip-off, a reverse Robin Hood, a giant hoax perpetrated on we poor saps known as taxpayers.

The final data is in.  Some  690,114 cars were sold that were subsidized by “we the people” to the tune of $2.877 billion dollars plus the cost of servicing the additional debt.  Our country is broke, remember?

The Obama Administration called the program “wildly successful.”   There is something seriously wrong with this picture.    Continue reading ““Cash for Clunkers” RIP”

Seniors Divorce AARP (It’s harder than you think)

It was a marriage made in Heaven, or so it seemed, senior citizens and the AARP.

When you reach age 50, you get a letter from the AARP inviting you to join and offering discounts at thousands of businesses across America, and an opportunity to purchase insurance on almost everything at the AARP’s group rate, all for $16 per year.

With 84 million Americans now over the age of 50, and some 40 million of them carrying AARP cards, that’s real clout.  Something for practically nothing, what a deal!

Every year, thousands of Americans join AARP before they realize those discounts come with a lot of heavy baggage. Continue reading “Seniors Divorce AARP (It’s harder than you think)”

Obamacare: Throw Mamma from the Train!

Obama is out pushing a health care reform bill he hasn’t read and guaranteeing that it will offer

•    lower cost
•    promote choice
•    cover everyone
•    be more efficient
•    won’t increase the deficit
•    give free ice cream

Okay, I admit that I lied about that last part if you will acknowledge that Obama simply cannot achieve the other five goals without drastically lowering the amount and quality of the healthcare that Americans now receive and have come to expect.

Sotomayor Bests Clinton in Game of Word-dodge

In 1998, Bill Clinton tried to convince a grand jury – and the nation – that his guilt or innocence in the Monica Lewinsky affair depended on “what the definition of ‘is’ is.”

In her confirmation hearing for the Supreme Court, Judge Sonia Sotomayor has bested the former president.   In defending the radical remarks she made to the ACLU in Puerto Rico on the use of foreign law as a basis for making judicial decisions, Sotomayor told the members of the Senate Judicial Committee, that there was “no conflict” between that speech she gave in April and her statements to them.  It’s all about a “misunderstanding” of the word “use.” Continue reading “Sotomayor Bests Clinton in Game of Word-dodge”

How Jilted GOP can win back the Voters

The closest thing to eternal life on earth is a government program. Coming in a close second is the congressional incumbent.

He or she could be a complete nincompoop but, once in office, a member of the House of Representatives or the Senate has a staff that is tasked with carving out pork barrel projects to send back home so their member of Congress can say to the voters, “Look what I’ve done for you!” Continue reading “How Jilted GOP can win back the Voters”

Why the GOP Elite Despises Sarah Palin

The GOP was the Grand Old Party.  Now it’s the Gray Old Party and no about of Grecian Formula can hide the obvious.

Somewhere along the way, the GOP adopted an unofficial rule that says you run for office, bring home expensive pork barrel projects to your state, have a few roads and bridges named after you,  campaign for others, and when you are old and gray and have enough political chits to call in, it becomes your turn to be the party’s nominee for president of the United State.
