Time to Forgive

“To Err is Human, to Forgive Devine” Alexander Pope 1688-1744

A cadre of former Trump haters was recently asked about the president’s past sins which include allegations of sexual improprieties, one night stands and/or affairs with women.  To this House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi replied,  (parentheses mine)

“I do not believe that it is my place to question the accounts put forth by the women but I do find myself asking that if we are examining (his) industry (building & entertainment) as it existed decades before through the lens of 2018 should we also discuss a path to learning, reconciliation, and forgiveness?”

Rep. Maxine Water’s chimed in,

To reach a point where we can accept some space between zero accountability and complete destruction, we must first grapple with the issue of equivalency. If we paint episodes of vulgar and deeply regrettable behavior from (a decade or more) ago with the same brush as serial criminal behavior, we will never move forward and, more importantly, we eschew the complicated nuances of context for the easier path of absolutes.”

The View’s Joy Behar summed things up:

“Outrage is a valuable commodity…but its usefulness can be diminished by overuse. And understanding and learning from the past is the only way towards a future that reflects real change.”

This call for civility, forgiveness and understanding for a man accused of sexual harassment over a decade ago, but who has been a champion of women, promoting them in a field that had previously barred them from holding positions of power and influence, unfortunately was not directed at Trump by these three women.

No! All of the above was in a statement from CBS Films president Terry Press in defense of CBS Corporation chairman and CEO, Les Moonves who was accused of sexual misconduct by six women.   It followed even more forceful statements of support by CBS executives, Ad Sales chief Jo Ann Ross and head of daytime Angelica McDaniel.

This was not unlike the statements of support from females in Congress and other positions of influence for Bill Clinton after he was impeached for charges related to his sexual involvement with an intern, no less, in the hallowed Oval Office.

Clinton was viewed by his supporters as just too valuable to the country, in general, and the women’s movement, in particular, to be hoisted by his own petard.

Isn’t it a shame that our current president, who has done so much to turn this country around, while taking no salary for his work as the nation’s chief executive, isn’t given the same consideration?  After all, the charges against him are at least a decade or more old and don’t involve the workplace.

Men like Moonves, post-Clinton, probably will not survive.  Some shouldn’t.  However,  to allow Moonves to be forgiven would, indeed, be viewed as a double standard for those who hate Trump so much that they now believe any past sexual sins should disqualify him from holding the highest office in the land.  They want Trump impeached so badly many seem willing to believe any charge against any man, no matter how spurious, how ludicrous or how old, just to justify their claim against the president’s legitimacy.

Trump, like Moonves, is from another era, where men often measured their manhood against their ability to seduce women.  Even if they had no intention of doing anything improper, they were often guilty of bragging about this ability to other men.  Some of these men actually viewed making suggestive remarks or flirting as a way to give a woman a compliment.  I’ve encountered my share.  Smart women either changed jobs, ignored these clumsy advances or found a way to let a man know this was not acceptable while letting him keep his dignity.

However, none of the women who claim Trump had affairs with them or one-night stands or gave them unwanted attention were his employees as was the case Moonves.  In fact, many sought his attention.

Trump is well-known for promoting women in his industry like Louise Sunshine who rose to executive vice-president of the Trump organization.  Sunshine worked for Trump for 15 years and has admitted that he often chided her about her appearance.  However, she wasn’t offended.  She said, “It was a reminder that I wasn’t perfect…It was just his way.”

They and the others who were promoted by Trump defend him to the hilt and forgave him for his imperfections.  Isn’t it time the rest of the country took a deep breath and did the same.

The U.S. vs China

How can China hurt us?  Let us count the ways:

First and foremost, they hold most of our foreign debt, 19 percent or $1.17 trillion.  By buying U.S. treasuries, China keeps our interest rates low but it also gives China leverage over U.S. fiscal policy.

What would happen if China stopped buying U.S. treasures or, worst still, called the loans?

China also controls the supply of the world’s rare earth metals that are used in most of the high-tech products we take for granted like smart phones and hard drives.  More importantly, these materials are necessary components for building smart bombs and military radar.  It’s not that we don’t have any of these minerals.  It’s just that our government shut down our only rare earth mine and allowed the Chinese to buy the company that supplied them.

Lastly, China now has access to our most sensitive military technology.  That which wasn’t stolen was transferred overtly by previous administrations.   Continue reading “The U.S. vs China”

The Comey Cavil

James Comey was an imposing presence at the FBI.  At 6’8” he was head and shoulders above most, and from this lofty perch he often looked down his nose at everyone else.  After being unceremoniously dumped by President Trump, he now feels the need to preach to us and has written his version of the events for a book titled A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership, which is coming out later this month.

Those who have worked with Comey say preaching is something he did quite often when facing colleagues who disagree with him.  That earned him the title of “The Cardinal.”

Newspapers and television networks have been working overtime to make sure Comey has as loud a megaphone as possible in which to tell his tale of woe and sling as much mud as possible in the direction of his persecutor in the White House. Continue reading “The Comey Cavil”

A Victory for the Great Unwashed (Now GOP Leaders must Put Up or Shut Up)

I was born in what was then a deep blue state, into a Democratic family.  Among my kin you were either a Democrat or un-American.  As a youngster I asked my parents, “Why are we Democrats?”  They answered, “Because Democrats are for the working people.”

My parents both worked very hard and so I just accepted that.  When I turned 18, I registered to vote and proudly voted in every election.  I didn’t know anything about the issues, but I voted.  When I became a parent, I began to study the issues and realized that Democrats were not what they seemed.  They supported principles that undermined the working class, small business owners and immigrants who wanted their shot at the American dream.   As the years rolled by, these Democrats took positions that were, well, un-American.

Much to my chagrin, I discovered, that Republicans weren’t much better.  Although, they talked a good ballgame about law and order, the free enterprise system and protecting the rights of the minority by defending the Constitution, they were afraid to make the case for these beliefs.  They were gradually taken over by political correctness and were unwilling to fight for anything for fear of losing their precious seats in Congress and their small grip on what power they had left. Women: Vote with Your Brains not Your Gentials

The cast of Orange is the New Black reached a new low (even for this disgusting sitcom) this week when it posed wearing “Vaginas Against Trump” T-shirts.  These shirts have been available on-line for $16.99 for over a year now.  Just an example of the class displayed by some Hillary supporters.   And she has the nerve to call Trump supporters “deplorable.”

For the record, I am sick about the choice we face in this election and I stand by all the previous columns I have written criticizing the now Republican nominee.  Nevertheless, it is the choice we face and voters are asked to choose between bad and worse.  We must choose between someone who has been a womanizer and someone who has enabled a womanizer who actually abused women while holding public office.  This is a far more serious offense, not only against these women, but against the offices he held and the public trust. Hillary Clinton: The User

Hillary Clinton is a user.  No, to my knowledge she doesn’t do illegal drugs.  Her drug of choice is political power and it should be obvious to anyone who is paying attention she has and will use anything or anyone to get it.  The best example is her 41 year marriage to a charismatic serial philanderer, who used his charm to become president of the United States and now is attempting to use that charm to secure power again through his dutifully addicted wife.

After failing to pass the bar exam in Washington, D.C., Hillary managed to pass a much easier one in Arkansas and, at that point, decided to hitch her wagon to Bill Clinton, who was running for a seat in the United States Congress.  Although Bill lost that election, two years later he was elected attorney general and then governor of the state.  It was a perfect setup.  Hillary was made a partner in the Rose Law Firm where she served as “rainmaker,” securing wealthy clients for the firm who, in turn, wanted favors from the state. Clinton Crimes in Haiti

My husband and I share something in common with Bill and Hillary Clinton.    We spent our honeymoon in Haiti.  It was on that trip that we first encountered real poverty, the likes of which most U.S. citizens have never seen or even imagined.

After the overthrow of the Duvalier regime, we had great hope for the country but, alas, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, who was elected democratically in 1990, turned into one of the most brutal dictators in Haiti’s history.  Bill Clinton often claimed that he “restored democracy to Haiti.”  In truth, by forcing Aristide back on these people in 1994, the country was left worse off than ever before.    Continue reading “Clinton Crimes in Haiti”
