When the Going gets Tough (The Tough get out of Town)

To say that President Obama is unpopular these days is like saying the weather changes or garbage smells. It’s obvious.

Instead of garbage, it’s Obamacare that is stinking up the place and no amount of running away from the problem or burning 25,000 gallons of jet fuel can escape this disaster.  Nevertheless Obama put 3,000 miles between himself and Washington, D.C., over the long President’s Day weekend traveling to my state of  California on the eve of the fifth anniversary of his second biggest achievement, the Obama stimulus.

Did I mention that one smells too?    Continue reading “When the Going gets Tough (The Tough get out of Town)”

Are You Man (Woman) Enough to Say “No” to Girl Scout Cookies (Be Warned; Be Informed; Be Ready)

Are you man (or woman) enough to say “No” to a child?

Before you answer this question consider this:  When liberals try to justify more government spending they trot out our youth.  “Do it (whatever ill-conceived big government program they are promoting) for the children boohoo, sob, sob!

This makes conservative legislators quake in their boots.  It is only a matter of time before, they cave in to this pressure.  I offer our 17 trillion dollar national debt as Exhibit A.

Now, bring it down to a personal level.  It is one thing to say “No” to a little boy.  It is quite another to say “No” to a precious little girl, looking up at you with those beautiful, big, expectant eyes.

That’s what you will be up against if you join — and you should —  the boycott against Girl Scout cookies begun by Pro-Life Waco and now joined by countless pro-life and pro-family organizations. Sample Letter to Girl Scout Leaders

February 2019

Dear Girl Scout Leader:

Thank you for being involved in the important process of training our next generation.

I am sorry that I cannot buy the cookies but I am interested in supporting your troop.  In fact I am willing to donate  $        to you troop to help you transition to American Heritage Girls, which was begun in 1995 by dedicated Girl Scout leaders like yourself who were disturbed by the changes that had taken place in the national organization and discovered there was no way to change the organization from within.  Continue reading “Sample Letter to Girl Scout Leaders”

Feeding Millionnaires while Taxpayers Shiver

Some of the Democrats’ leading bleeding-heart liberals found common ground this past week with the biggest corporate welfare-loving Republicans in a most unlikely source, the farm bill, which is now headed to President Obama.

Mostly Republicans in the House and mostly Democrats in the Senate came together with congressional leaders in a big Kumbaya moment to pass a bill that is an affront to every citizen who struggles to pay his or her taxes.

Most of us tune out when we hear the word “farm.”  In a nation that long ago moved away from an agrarian society, the closest we get to the soil these days is when we mow the lawn or wash a the few drops of dirt from the produce we bring home from the market.

However, our representatives in Washington just spent more on the farm bill than was spent on the much maligned Obama stimulus, $956.4 billion over 10 years to be exact.  And this farm bill is every bit as wasteful as the aforementioned boondoggle. The Super Bowl vs State of the Union

Two topics dominate the news this week:  the Super Bowl and the president’s annual State of the Union address.

The Super Bowl is expected to draw some 111 million viewers; The State of the Union address was viewed by some 30 million.  The Super Bowl has no real impact on our lives while the state of our union is of upmost important to every citizen.  So why the disparity?

It’s simple:  The Super Bowl means something to the teams involved and to their respective fans.  There will be an end result:  a winner and a loser.  The State of the Union address and the response from the Republican Party, which controls the House of Representatives, is mere rhetoric, empty words.  To borrow from Shakespeare’s Macbeth, they are full of “sound and furry, signifying nothing.” Continue reading “The Super Bowl vs State of the Union”

Why the Abortion Issue won’t go away

In 1983, 10 years after Roe v Wade, I interviewed Senator Bob Packwood, R-Ore., a darling of the left and the champion of abortion rights in the Republican Party, for the documentary “A Matter of Choice.”  He said, “Abortion is an issue that burns real hot and like any fire that burns red hot, it won’t be long before it burns itself out!”

Ten years later, Bob Packwood, the powerful chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, was gone.  He was forced to resign after being exposed for sexual harassment. The firestorm over abortion remains.

Abortion is still the hottest single issue on the political landscape and will play a key role in the 2014 mid-term election.  Continue reading “Why the Abortion Issue won’t go away”

Ten Best Conservative New Year’s Resolutions

Feeling a little guilty because you were caught up in the holiday rush and failed to make New Year’s resolutions?   It’s not too late.   January is a time to reassess, revitalize and invest in some worthwhile habits that will improve your life and the lives of those around you.

Many of my conservative friends tell me they have stopped watching the news.  It’s just too depressing.  With Obama as president, liberals in control of the Senate and Republican leaders in the House quaking in their boots, it looks as if the country will continue to decline as we complete the long, slow march toward socialism.  Can anything stop it?  Many conservatives have just given up. The Amateur

There is a place for amateurs. However, there are times when you definitely need a professional. Most people would never call an amateur to put in a driveway or install a new roof. You wouldn’t want an amateur to build your house or do the wiring. You wouldn’t want an amateur to do your dental work or perform heart surgery. Let’s face it. Most people wouldn’t let an amateur cut their hair or do their nails.

Likewise, if you own a business, you wouldn’t hire amateurs to design your products, construct you assembly lines, do your accounting or manage your employees. If you need someone to run that business, you would hire the most experienced person with the best track record you can afford.

Then why, oh why, would anyone consider hiring an amateur to manage the largest business in the world, the United States Government? Continue reading “The Amateur”

The Joy of Christmas

“Joy” is one of the most overused words of the holiday season. It’s on our Christmas cards, gift tags and more. It is the subject of our songs and carols.

Christmas is the time to celebrate the birth of Christ. It should be a time of rejoicing and good cheer. But what if you don’t feel joyful? Many fake it, which leaves them feeling empty inside.

Others quickly lose their joy when the feasting is over, the presents are unwrapped and guests go to their respective homes.

Where did all this joy go? Did it simply vanish into thin air? Did it go into the attic with the tinsel and lights? Did it disappear with that huge pile of crumbled paper and ribbon? Is it in the box with the crèche perhaps?

No, it’s not there.

Many confuse joy with happiness, but the two are not the same. Happiness depends on circumstance, while joy does not.

Many Christians use this time to rededicate their lives. They vow to do all the right things, even if it kills them and it often does, if not physically, mentally. They end up exhausted and joyless.

Let’s face it. Living the Christian life is hard work. In fact, it is impossible on our own.

But wait! Christ told us, “My yoke is easy. My burden is light.”

It is possible to leave Christ the baby in the manger and miss the real meaning of Christmas, the reason He came to earth and lived among us.

Maybe there was a time when you had the joy, so you know what I’m talking about. However, somewhere in your zeal to “work out your salvation,” the work part took over.

Bob George analyzed this problem in a little book called “Classic Christianity.” He points out that it is a human tendency to turn what should be a vibrant, personal relationship with Christ into a religion. We stray away from the basics and often substitute the good things for the real thing.

It is so easy to get caught up in the activity of the “shoulds” of the world and the church that we forget that the Christian life is Christ, not just a change in lifestyle.

When you become a Christian, you die to yourself. In other words, you leave your old self behind and invite the resurrected Christ to live through you. But our human nature dies hard. We must ask the Holy Spirit to indwell us each and every day. We must renew our minds with His word. We also need daily two-way conversations with our Lord through prayer.Prayer involves a lot more than simply thanking God for His blessings, asking for forgiveness when we stumble (and we all do) and giving God our wish lists. The most important part is asking, “Lord, what would You have me to do today?” In other words, we need to use our prayer time to substitute His wish list for ours. When you do that, amazing things begin to happen.

Jesus will be there to guide you and to help you carry out His will every step of the way. It’s like jumping off to “light speed.” And when you come up against a seemingly impossible task, He makes a way, where there is no way. Living in this knowledge is where the real joy comes in.

It puts the little things that can trip us up – things like cleaning up from this big holiday celebration – in perspective.

The Bible says, ”Ask whatsoever you will and it will be given unto you, if (and this is a mighty big if) you abide in Me and My words abide in you.”

Don’t miss the real thing this Christmas. Don’t leave Christ the baby in the manger. If you have never invited Him to come into your life, why not do so today?

Perhaps you think you are not good enough. No one is. The Bible says, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” That is why God sent His Son, Jesus, into the world, not only to teach us how to live, but to pay the price for our sins. When we accept Christ as our Savior and Lord, we are washed white as snow.

So now that the presents are unwrapped, you can look forward, not only to a new year, but a new beginning.

Wishing you the peace and true joy that only comes through following Him.

Paul Ryan’s Tax on Travelers

The assertion by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan and his Senate counterpart, Patty Murray, that their budget compromise does not raise taxes is tantamount to Barack Obama’s pledge, “If you like your (insurance) plan, you can keep it.”

All of the above knew their statements to be bald-faced lies right from the get-go!

The difference is it took most people more than two years to figure out Obama’s charade, while most airline passengers already know the Ryan-Murray line won’t fly. Continue reading “Paul Ryan’s Tax on Travelers”
