Miss America — The Latest Trump Bashing Spectacle (Whatever Happened to World Peace?)

As hurricane Irma ripped into Florida, Miss America’s finalists were bated into bashing President Trump. While it is too early to assess the damage, my guess is the lasting effects on this historic piece of Americana will linger long after Florida has recovered and they will not be good.

The grand finale of the iconic Miss America Pageant always has been questions thrown at the finalists.  It has been the undoing of many young women in a contest where poise is as important as one’s overall beauty and talent.   The objective was to answer the question confidently without saying anything too controversial or dumb.   Continue reading “Miss America — The Latest Trump Bashing Spectacle (Whatever Happened to World Peace?)”

No Honks for DACA

Traveling through downtown Phoenix last week, a city at the heart of the illegal immigration issue, I passed a small group of protesters carrying signs, “Honk if you support DACA.”

For the uninitiated that is Obama’s unconstitutional amnesty for young people illegally brought into this country by their parents.  We are talking up to 30-year-old children here. Continue reading “No Honks for DACA”

Buyer’s Remorse (In Arizona and Elsewhere)

Voters in Arizona are suffering buyer’s remorse over their decision to re-elect Senator John McCain over his challenger, Dr. Kelli Ward.  Indeed, every conservative voter in the nation has had their “what if” moment when they pause to consider McCain’s last re-election victory.

What if Kelli Ward had knocked off Arizona’s senior senator in 2016?  For those who pay attention, it is well-known that McCain is no conservative and often speaks out of both sides of his mouth when it comes to important issues like balancing the budget, cutting out waste, defending the border and even protecting the military from political correctness.

Nevertheless, McCain, a media darling (as long as he is knocking fellow Republicans) has fashioned his political career around supporting Democrats on critical issues and then suffering a conservative conversion before he’s up for reelection — just in time to fool the voters, again.

McCain has secured his seat for another five + years, barring his health issues, but voters in Arizona have another chance to send Ward to the United States Senate.  They appear ready to do just that. Continue reading “Buyer’s Remorse (In Arizona and Elsewhere)”

Trump and the Fire Swamp

Donald Trump went to Washington promising to drain the swamp.  The swamp is winning.  That’s because it is a lot more complicated than simply pulling the plug and watching the whole mess go down the drain.

No, the swamp in Washington is more like the fictional fire swamp in the movie “The Princess Bride.”   Washington, like the swamp in this movie classic, has three elements:  the fire (obvious), lighting sand (dryer and quicker than quicksand) and the dreaded R.O.U.S. (rodents of unusual size).  Continue reading “Trump and the Fire Swamp”

Racists, Fascists, Bigots, Nazis! (Name-Calling Serves no useful Purpose)

Racists, Fascists, Bigots, Nazis!

(Name-calling serves no useful purpose)

President’s Trump’s remarks to the nation on Saturday during the violence that occurred in Charlottesville, Va., were meant to calm the nation.  They were thoughtful, measured and on target.   The fact that his remarks were criticized by the radical left is not new.  There is nothing this president has ever said or done — or could ever do —short of sacrificing his children before a statue of Maxine Waters that would appease this group.   They deal in unfounded acquisitions, name-calling and demagoguery.

The fact that Trump was criticized by so many in his own party, however, is regrettable.  It shows these people to be spineless sycophants who would do anything to protect their backsides, keep the boat of political correctness afloat or grab a little media attention.  Others, like The Weekly Standard’s Bill Kristol, have hitched their wagons to the never-Trump crusade and are hopelessly stuck in that mode and now corporate CEO’s are pandering.

Nevertheless, those who have criticized the president for not initially calling out specific persons or groups while Charlottesville and state police were still working to disperse the crowd and assess what went wrong, should hang their heads in shame.  Were there white supremacists and other misguided, disaffected groups among the organizers of the “Unite the Right” event called to protest the removal of the statue of Gen. Robert E. Lee?  Yes.  Were there militant and undesirable groups among the organizers of the anti-protest?  Yes, and these two groups clashed before the event even began causing the governor to declare a state of  emergency, but who was to blame for the violence?

Were all those who gathered in Charlottesville bad people?  No.  Many were simply dismayed that some of our history is being unceremoniously destroyed.  Others believe that honoring anyone who fought on the side of the Confederacy is an affront to society.

Given the history of Black Lives Matter and the recent violence perpetrated by Antifa that turned some of our college campuses into war zones, our president was absolutely right to show restraint.  He should be applauded, but instead he has been soundly criticized.

What exactly did the president say that was so offensive?

We’re closely following the terrible events unfolding in Charlottesville, Virginia. We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides, on many sides. It’s been going on for a long time in our country. Not Donald Trump, not Barack Obama, this has been going on for a long, long time. It has no place in America. What is vital now is a swift restoration of law and order and the protection of innocent lives.

Trump went on to remind us of this important truth:

(N)o matter our color, creed, religion or political party, we are all Americans first. We love our country. We love our God. We love our flag. We’re proud of our country. We’re proud of who we are, so we want to get the situation straightened out in Charlottesville, and we want to study it. And we want to see what we’re doing wrong as a country where things like this can happen…

What was so wrong about those statements?  He called on the country to come together as one.  It’s as simple as that.

On Monday, Charlottesville Police Chief Al Thomas, Jr. did his best to correctly chronicle the events that led to the tragedy.  Thomas stated that the problem began with “mutually combatant protestors” confronting each other.    In other words, groups or individuals on both sides.

All of us remember how Barack Obama was quick to jump to conclusions and assign blame.  One unfortunate incident resulted in a “beer summit” at the White House for one of the unjustly accused.  Make no mistake, I, like Donald Trump, think that David Duke is a reprehensible individual, but what if Trump had unjustly accused him?   Yes, even that would have been a mistake.   It simply would have been wrong to point the finger at any one individual or any group at that time.

Now I could point out how the media never seems to single out or speak ill of anyone or any group on the left that incites racial discord and, yes, even violence.  The cable networks have given some of the worst offenders platforms and some of these individuals their own shows.

As a country, we need to get a grip and put an end to this reactionary piling on.  Name-calling and the baseless accusations against Trump and some of his staff in the White House serves no useful purpose and further divides us.  It needs to stop!

Mitch McConnell Resigns! (For the good of the Country)

In 1974, Richard Nixon resigned as president of the United States after he was mired in the Watergate scandal.

In 1990, Margaret Thatcher resigned as British prime minister after narrowly failing to win outright in the first Round of a leadership contest.

In 2002, Trent Lott resigned as Senate Republican leader after making some controversial remarks at the100th birthday party of fellow senator, Strom Thurmond.

In 2004, George Tenet resigned as Director of the CIA in the wake of criticism of the agency’s approach to the intelligence used to support the 2003 Iraq War.

In 2010, Yukio Hatoyama resigned as prime minister of Japan after breaking a campaign promise to close an American military base on the island of Okinawa.

In 2016, David Cameron resigned as prime minister of the United Kingdom after its citizens voted to leave the European Union

In 2017, Mitch McConnell resigned as Senate Majority Leader after failing to deliver a vote to repeal Obamacare.   Continue reading “Mitch McConnell Resigns! (For the good of the Country)”

Return the Military to its original Purpose (To Kill People and Break Things)

Personally, I love the fact that President Trump has a penchant for hiring retired generals.  However, there are two distinct types of military leaders:  those who are boot-licking sycophants who will do anything to get a higher command and those who will stand up for what is right for those willing to put their very lives on the line, if duty demands it, in order to defend this country.

Gen. John Kelly, Trump’s new chief-of-staff, is squarely in the latter category.   Last Wednesday, two days before Trump announced that Gen. Kelly would be assuming this post, Trump tweeted that he is ending the policy of accepting transsexuals in the military.  Although, Gen. Kelly has never spoken out on this issue, one can assume that he agrees with the policy or he never would have accepted this position.

Although, the Pentagon has stated that no change will be made until it gets the official order in writing, it is only a matter of time before this latest Obama effort to weaken our military is headed for the dust bin.

It should be noted that the military never asked that the policy barring transsexuals from military service be lifted.  It simply was imposed by Obama last June, a mere six months before he was headed out the door.

The Center for Military Readiness has issued a comprehensive 19-page report https://cmrlink.org/data/sites/85/CMRDocuments/CMR_TransgenderPolAnalysis.pdf on the Obama directives, which documents how our 44th president began laying the groundwork for this destructive policy in June 2015, and how it continued through the early days of the Trump Administration via Obama holdovers.

Thankfully, the military has not actively recruited those suffering from gender dysphasia.  That was supposed to begin on July 31.   However, the Trump administration put a temporary hold on that directive, which may save many disturbed young people from undergoing a costly, painful surgeries they may live to regret. Meanwhile, service members who claim to be struggling with this disorder, were encouraged to come forward during this time which was, no doubt, designed to strengthen the Obama Administration’s position.

Kelly, like Trump, has no tolerance for political correctness.  In 2016, when the Obama Administration announced that it was lifting the ban on women in ground combat, but would not be lowering the standards for these positions, Gen. Kelly scoffed, “There will be great pressure, whether it’s 12 months from now, four years from now, because the questions will be asked whether we’ve let women into these other roles, why aren’t they staying in those other roles.  Why aren’t they advancing as infantry people?”

Kelly has learned from experience.  He has been a Marine for 45 years and during that time he has seen the standards lowered in our service academies, in basic training and in other specialities in order to insure that women get these assignments.  Kelly made it clear to the Obama Administration that any change in the military should be made only if that change will make units more lethal.  “If the answer is ‘No,’ clearly don’t do it,” said Kelly.  “If the answer to that is, ‘It shouldn’t hurt,’ I would suggest that we shouldn’t do it, because it might hurt.” Of course the Obama Administration did it anyway.

Who in their right mind would think that having women in combat units will help those units survive?  Many years ago the Israeli military tried this experiment with disastrous results.

It may not be fair that the average man is 6 inches taller, 30 pounds heavier and, more importantly, has 42 percent more upper body strength than the average woman, but it’s reality.

And while we are on that subject, who in their right mind would think that giving a man female hormones and reconstructive surgery will make him more of a lean, mean fighting machine?  Who in their right mind would think that giving a woman male hormones and reconstructive surgery will give her the physical edge necessary to compete with the average man?

Ever hear of military necessity?  There is no military necessity of having those with gender dysphasia serve in the military as there was no military necessity for placing women in direct ground combat units.  It is not only foolish and a waste of taxpayer dollars, but it will needlessly cost lives and cause heartbreak.  Gen. Kelly knows about that heartbreak.  He is the highest ranking military officer to lose a son in Iraq or Afghanistan

Hopefully, with Kelly alongside Trump in the White House, we will soon see the military returned to its original purpose — to kill people and break things — not used as a laboratory for social experimentation.

Fake News

Media bias is a fact of life.  Discerning citizens who regularly read newspapers or watch a nightly newscast have noticed a distinct slant to the left that gets more extreme with each passing year.  Polls showing the preferences and voting patterns of journalists show it, and a number of peer reviewed studies confirm it.  While most Americans identify as moderate to conservative, the news media is decidedly liberal.

The question I am asked quite often is, “Why?”  Continue reading “Fake News”

Just Repeal Obamacare (Trust the Free Market)

Can we be honest.  The fight over the effort to repeal and replace Obamacare is about one thing and one thing only:  The number of people who were given a freebee, added to the roles of Medicaid.

Liberals want single-payer, government-run, one size-fits-all health care for everyone.  It doesn’t work well anywhere in the world but that’s beside the point.  They want something for nothing.  If they can’t achieve it in one fell swoop, they will try to do it bit by bit until the door to socialized medicine slams shut and everyone is locked into a system where there is no individual control.

So, let’s just repeal Obamacare and have a debate on the real issue:  Do we really want to expand Medicaid beyond its original stated purposed, a heath plan to care for the poor and those who truly cannot care for themselves. Continue reading “Just Repeal Obamacare (Trust the Free Market)”

How to Save the Country a Ton of Money

How many times have you contacted a local company only to be helped by someone with an accent so thick you could cut it with a knife?   Now I have nothing but deep respect for someone from another country who has learned English, but I have discovered that most of these local calls for service are rerouted to India or the Philippines.

I have nothing against either of these countries, but why aren’t these calls being answered by Americans?  It’a pure economics.  It’s cheaper to reroute these calls halfway around the world than to hire Americans willing to work.  Ah, the key word in that sentence is “willing.” Continue reading “How to Save the Country a Ton of Money”
