Merry Christmas, Iraq

Deck the halls with boughs of holly! Tis the season to be jolly!Where is the most joyful place on earth these days?

It is Iraq, where, last week, millions of its citizens turned out to vote for the first truly democratic government in the history of the Arab Middle East.

The Kurds and Shiites weren’t the only ones dancing in the streets. The Sunnis joined the party after deciding that ballots are better than bullets when it comes to settling differences with your neighbors.

Perhaps the biggest smiles in Iraq are on the faces of American GIs who have been on the front lines of the struggle to defeat terrorists in that country. Despite all the naysayers here at home, they are re-enlisting in record numbers. Have yourself a furry little Christmas

J. Crew recently bowed to pressure from animal-rights activists and stopped selling fur after People for the Ethical Treatment for Animals staged an 11-week protest against the retailer. Yes, “Christmas” isn’t the only thing taking it on the chin this winter.

Want to strike a blow against political correctness, assert your independence and help the one class of farmers who are not looking for government handouts? Buy fur. What Does It Mean to be Truly Thankful?

What does it mean to be truly thankful? It is an attitude of gratitude toward our Maker.

Gratitude is not passive. It is more than offering up a traditional prayer before you sit down to a feast, followed by an afternoon of watching football in front of the television. It is an acknowledgment that all that we have, our very existence, is a gift from God – a God who made man in His image in order to have communion with him.

California Parents Blindsided

Quick – raise your hand if you think the state can do a better job of protecting your children than you can.

No parent in his or her right mind would answer “yes” to a question like that.

However, that was the way over 52 percent of California voters answered that question in Tuesday’s special election. They nixed Proposition 73, a constitutional amendment that would have given parents back their right to be notified before one of their children is given an abortion – a right that was taken away from them by activist judges on the state supreme court. Let the Rumble Begin

President Bush set the stage for a fight when he nominated Samuel A. Alito to the Supreme Court. But let’s be clear about this one thing: This is a fight conservatives have been avoiding for years.

At stake is whether Supreme Court justices should interpret the Constitution or make law according to their own political whims.

The latter scenario should be scary to both liberals and conservatives. It is about giving up the rights carefully enumerated in the Constitution to five or more political ideologues, unaccountable to no one and reducing our elected representatives to mere set dressing.

It is not a big secret as to why the extreme left has been pushing us in that direction. It was the only way these folks could hope to push their unpopular ideas down our throats. They Think We Are a Bunch of Dummies

They think we’re a bunch of dummies! How else can you explain some of the rhetoric coming out of the White House and Congress?

Case in point was an answer Scott McClellan, the president’s mouthpiece, gave WorldNetDaily’s Les Kinsolving last week. Kinsolving asked if Bush is concerned that he is alienating his conservative base by increasing the federal budget deficit and not vetoing a single piece of legislation. Needed: Religious Conservatives with Backbone

The revolt in the Republican ranks over the nomination of Harriett Miers to the Supreme Court is extremely significant. For the first time since George W. Bush was elected president, the leading conservative watchdog groups, even many from the religious right, are showing some backbone and are not blindly walking the plank for this man.

My biggest problem with Hariett Miers

My biggest problem with Harriet Miers is the same as it was for John Roberts, the new chief justice of the Supreme Court. It is the same as it has been for President Bush. It is an issue from which pro-family leaders and leaders of the religious right – the groups that got out the votes that put Bush over the top in the last two presidential elections – have shied away. It is the advancement of gay rights.

Please, understand. I do not care what someone does behind closed doors with their sex life (as long as it does not include a minor). That is just too much information. I am concerned, however, when a behavior – any behavior – gives the person practicing that behavior access to my hard-earned tax dollars or special privileges under the law.
