10 Predictions for the New Congress

Despite, thousands of letters, emails and phone calls, John Boehner was re-elected speaker of the House of Representatives but it wasn’t an overwhelming show of support.  Twenty-five brave Republican congressmen (http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-fix/wp/2015/01/06/here-are-the-republicans-who-voted-against-john-boehner-for-speaker/ ) withstood pressure from within the conference and were willing to suffer retaliation in order to cast a vote for someone else or simply vote “present.”  It was the largest number of congressmen to vote against a sitting speaker from their own party in 100 years.

Boehner ran up the white flag of surrender shortly after the election.  It’s going to be a long, disappointing two years.  That said, here are my predictions for the new Congress, predictions that I hope and pray will not come true.   Continue reading “10 Predictions for the New Congress”

“D-Day” for Republicans

“D-Day” is a military term used to denote the beginning of a combat mission.

There is a new D-Day coming.  Let’s call it “Decision Day for the United States.  It falls on December 11.  That is the day the GOP must decide if it will accept the mandate it was given by the American people to lead or if it will run up the white flag of surrender to an unpopular but stubborn president.

If you have been paying attention, then you know that this is the day the government runs out of money.  The timing is awful, two weeks before Christmas when most people are busy with the holidays and have checked out politically.

This timing is no accident.  The price of liberty really is eternal vigilance.  There can be no liberty without the ability to control a fair portion of what we earn which is slowly slipping away with each passing tax increase.  And don’t kid yourself, if we don’t get the nation’s spending under control, more hefty tax increases are coming.  It’s just a matter of time. The bad news? GOP’s same Spineless Leaders

So you think the fact that Republicans now control both houses of Congress there will be a rollback of Obama’s unpopular policies?  Guess again.

If you hit the snooze button for another two years, there will be a lot of whining and gnashing of teeth, but nothing important will get done.  Obamacare will still be the law of the land.  We will still be spending more than we take in and our immigration laws will still be a joke.

But wait a minute.  Isn’t this why the electorate gave the Republicans control of Congress?  What about the millions that were spent on the ads Repubican candidates were running touting these very things?  Aren’t these the very issues this election was supposed to be all about? Continue reading “The bad news? GOP’s same Spineless Leaders”

Beware of Obamanesia

After months of presidential promises on an executive amnesty for millions of illegal aliens  (i.e. immigration reform), Obama punted.  In June, he put us all on notice that, when he returned from his August vacation, he would use his pen to do what Congress would not do.

A strange thing happened during those weeks of endless golf rounds on Martha’s Vineyard.  Public opinion polls tanked on the idea and Senate Democrats, worried about their reelections, began taking the president to task over his plan to by-pass Congress.

Last week, a Rasmussen poll found that 62 percent of likely voters are against the president’s proposed action.  Furthermore, 57 percent believe this action to be illegal.

It is little wonder that Senate Democrats in conservative states began heading for the tall grass.  It wasn’t long before the president followed. Continue reading “Beware of Obamanesia”

A Christian Response to the Border Crisis

The current crisis at the border due to the influx of thousand of young people and some children has tugged at our heartstrings and rightfully so.

The U.S. is a welcoming country.  We grant permanent legal status to a million applicants a year and temporary visas to countless others as tourists, students or the much abused H-1B program where businesses import workers claiming they can’t find qualified U.S. citizens to fill their job requirements.  In addition, we admit thousands more as refugees fleeing persecution based on religion, race, nationality, political opinion or membership in a particular social group.

Despite what you may have heard, the illegals crossing our southern border do not fall into the refugee category.  Most are from Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.  The problems in these countries are nothing new.  All of these governments receive aid from the U.S. but they are inept and fraught with corruption. The Border Crises in the U.S. and Israel

The border crises in the U.S. and Israel are not that complicated.  Draw on your parenting experience and follow me.

You have two siblings who are fighting.  The younger one is injured and comes running to you for help.  You punish the older child, but despite all your efforts at peace making, this scenario is repeated again and again until you finally discover that the younger one is the real aggressor.  He picks on his peaceful, larger brother until the older boy can stand it no longer and finally retaliates in an attempt to put an end to the conflict.  The younger brother’s reward is seeing his older brother punished.  And, yes, it is worth the occasional bloody nose.

The problem is solved when the younger one is finally held accountable and punished for his misdeeds.   Continue reading “The Border Crises in the U.S. and Israel”

A Billion Reasons to Stop Illegal Immigration Now

President Obama has requested $3.7 billion dollars to deal with the influx of illegal immigrants crossing our borders, many of them minors.  It is no secret that this administration has, in fact, put out the welcome mat by refusing to enforce many of our immigration laws and ignoring others.

The president has all the authority he needs to send these people home immediately.  The William Wilberforce Act, which Obama has used as an excuse to allow this crisis to continue, has a provision that allows him to limit its application in “exceptional circumstances.”  If this isn’t an exceptional circumstance, I would hate to see one. Real Immigration Reform: What’s Missing

We have a crisis on our souther border.  President Obama’s solution is to ask Congress for $3.8 billion dollars to process and care for these children who are illegally crossing into our country at an unprecedented rate.  This, of course, would only be a down payment because, if these children aren’t immediately returned to their home country, thousands more will be on their way.

Meanwhile, Obama is flying the children, many of whom are sick and diseased, around the country and dumping them in selected communities without so much as a warning to local officials.

This must stop, not only for the good of the country, but for the welfare of these children!  Obama’s policy and lack of enforcement are causing poor Central American parents to put their children into the care of smugglers in hopes of using them as anchors into the United States.  Sadly, many of these young people are mistreated and raped along the way!   Continue reading “Real Immigration Reform: What’s Missing”

Nero Fiddled; Obama Putts Around

The Emperor Nero may have gotten a bum rap.  It is believed this ancient leader fiddled while a great fire burned his Rome to the ground in A.D. 64, but the fiddle, or violin, hadn’t been invented yet.  Nevertheless, Nero did consider himself a serious musician.  Most likely the fiddling was simply a metaphor for his bad judgement, insensitivity and ineffectiveness.

Obama showed some of these same traits last weekend when he jetted to southern California for a commencement address, which was an excuse to spend a long weekend playing golf at two exclusive resorts in Palm Springs, barely squeezing in a fundraiser.

Now I don’t resent the president taking a little me-time or using his taxpayer-funded high-priced transportation to have a little fun, but if ever there was a time to stay in the White House Situation Room, this was it.   Continue reading “Nero Fiddled; Obama Putts Around”

How to Secure the Border

How can we secure our border with Mexico?  The answer is simple:  Secure the border!

We don’t need amnesty or work verification or bingo or pink elephants or anything else to secure the border.   All we need is the will to do it.

The so-called “comprehensive” immigration reform bill now before Congress is an example of the oldest con game in Washington which goes on decade after decade.  Our representatives tell us,  “Give us what we want and then we promise we will give you what you want.  Trust us.”   Somehow, it never quite works out  for “we the people.”   Continue reading “How to Secure the Border”
