Flight 1549: When Greed Replaces Gratitude

On January 15, the world watched in awe as all 155 passengers and crew from a downed US Airways jet were rescued from the Hudson River in New York in record time.  One passenger was briefly hospitalized with two broken legs but, miraculously, there were no serious injuries.

It was a great cause for celebration.  However, this celebration may be short lived.

While most of the passengers are grateful just to be alive and will greet each new day with the kind of appreciation that only comes from having lived through a harrowing experience, others are looking to “cash in.” Continue reading “Flight 1549: When Greed Replaces Gratitude”

Farewell to George W. Bush

No one is perfect. That is true for your spouse, your children, your mom, and (look in the mirror) even yourself.

While we readily recognize and accept the flaws and frailties of those closest to us, somehow we expect that the person we elect to be president of the United States will live up to all our grandiose expectations and we are shocked when we discover that he is a mere mortal.

That said, I say goodbye to President George W. Bush with a lot of mixed emotions. Continue reading “Farewell to George W. Bush”

My Favorite Obama Pick

I don’t have a lot in common with liberals.  They see government as the solution to every problem: I see government as the problem.   Therefore, I watched with some trepidation as the president-elect assembled a team of “experts,” who will be whispering in his ear, guiding his every move for the next few years.

It was tantamount to watching a two-year-old stack blocks.   You know that ragged tower is going to crumble, but how high will it go before it falls?   Which block will be the tipping point and how many will be left standing in the end? Continue reading “My Favorite Obama Pick”

Caroline Kennedy: “Let them, you know, eat cake.”

“Let them eat cake!”

Those infamous words were unjustly attributed to Marie Antoinette who died on the guillotine in 1793. The beautiful French queen supposedly uttered that statement after being told the populace had no bread. The phrase was indicative of her out-of-touch attitude and sense of entitlement that made her immensely unpopular with the French people and no doubt led to her demise and that of the monarchy.

This unbecoming attitude resurfaced last month in the unlikely form of Caroline Bouvier Kennedy, the daughter of the late President John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis. Continue reading “Caroline Kennedy: “Let them, you know, eat cake.””

Look what your Congressman put under the Tree

You are hurting. Your retirement fund has been cut in half. The value of your home has been slashed. You may be upside down on your mortgage. Someone in the family has been laid off from work. The price of basic necessities has soared.

Christmas is going to be rather sparse this year but, fear not, your government is here to help you. Yes, your dear Uncle Sam has some gifts for you, practical gifts that every sensible taxpayer can use and appreciate.

The Gospel According to Newsweek

Christians believe that the Bible is “God-breathed,” handed down, unchanged throughout the ages by the Creator himself.

Then, along comes Newsweek. In next week’s cover story, “Our Mutual Joy,” Lisa Miller advocates for gay marriage and tells us that God really didn’t mean all those explicit pronouncements against homosexuality in his holy Word. Continue reading “The Gospel According to Newsweek”

Thanksgiving: The Antidote for Worry and Fear

Not since the Great Depression has there been such a time of economic uncertainty in this country and around the world. The stock market has taken a dive. Foreclosed homes dot the landscape. Companies are going out of business. Bankruptcies are commonplace. People are being laid off. The job market is drying up. Natural disasters have taken their toll. Our sons and daughters are in harm’s way, serving in far off lands. It is rare to find anyone, who has not been adversely affected in some way. You see fear, anxiety and worry on the faces of family, friends and co-workers.

We need this day of Thanksgiving to put our lives in proper perspective. Continue reading “Thanksgiving: The Antidote for Worry and Fear”

Girl Scouts go hard-left and downhill

“Change” was the buzz word for the Obama campaign. Change was also the buzz word at the 51st Girl Scout National Council Session and Convention held earlier this month in Indianapolis, Indiana. It stands as further proof that change is not always for the better.

From the opening ceremony to the exhibitors in the convention hall, it is clear that the direction the Girl Scouts has chosen is a hard left, downhill. Continue reading “Girl Scouts go hard-left and downhill”
