McConnell’s Groundhog Day

On Saturday, just after the nation learned that Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia had died, Senator Mitch McConnell opened his mouth and created a vacuum.

In the days that followed, volumes of words have been spoken and written about the majority leader’s short statement regarding the appropriate time to choose an individual to fill Scalia’s seat on the high court.   Some praised his resolve.  Others denounced him for trying to control the process set forth in the Constitution.

It has been a big waste of airtime and newsprint.  In short, the majority leader said nothing of substance.  He is full of so much hot air, we could package him and replace the National Helium Reserve.  Then he might serve a useful purpose. Continue reading “McConnell’s Groundhog Day”

Marco Rubio was Right

Marco Rubio was exactly right when he said Barack Obama knows “exactly what he’s doing.”  He may have repeated himself three times too many in the New Hampshire debate, but the point Rubio made to counter his GOP opponents’ attack on his inexperience was spot on.

This should in no way be taken as an endorsement for the junior senator from Florida.  I believe that there is a good chance Rubio will be the eventual nominee.  However, he lost me when he dismissed the anchor baby problem by sweeping it under the ambiguous 14th Amendment.

Nevertheless, Rubio is right about Barack Obama.  He is without a doubt the most transformational president since Ronald Reagan.    Continue reading “Marco Rubio was Right”

The Best News out of Iowa

The best news out of Iowa is not that Ted Cruz won or that Donald Trump’s political gamble of skipping the last debate, like a sulking child, likely cost him a win there.

It’s not that the long predicted surge of Marco Rubio finally happened.

No, the best news out of Iowa is that a candidate who had the courage to boldly proclaim his opposition to federal mandates and subsidies for ethanol — which comes from corn — the top crop in the state, actually won there.

Be it Ted Cruz or Joe Blow, it turned the conventional political wisdom on its head.  It proves that you don’t have to pander to get elected.  If you are willing to make the case that these government handouts keep you under the thumb of Washington and wind up hurting everyone, eventually enough reasonable people will listen. Donald Trump vs. Megyn Kelly

Donald Trump is skipping Thursday’s night’s GOP presidential debate hosted by Fox News anchors Bret Baier, Megyn Kelly and Chris Wallace and holding his own town hall instead.  The lemmings in the news media will dutifully follow him and make this the story.

Let’s be clear.  The reason Trump is ducking this debate is because he is afraid to face the razor-sharp Kelly.  Trump, who has been short on specifics and long on bravado clearly came out the big loser when Kelly questioned him in the Fox News’ debate last August and he has been smarting over it ever since.  Sure, he won the on-line polls which amounted to little more than Trump groupies or paid operatives sitting at their computers for hours on end clicking his name over and over again.  However, he was caught flat-footed and ill-prepared by Kelly who cut him down to size as she has so many other egotistical politicians and office holders.

She had no intention of backing off in Round Two.  That’s why Trump asked Fox to replace her.  Continue reading “Donald Trump vs. Megyn Kelly”

The Siren Song of Bernie Sanders

If you are flummoxed as to how an aging, hard-core, avowed socialist like Bernie Sanders is leading in New Hampshire and nipping at Hillary Clinton in the national polls for the Democratic nomination for president, don’t be.  It’s really quite simple:  We all like free stuff.

Think about it.  Why does every product advertised on television these days offer a second product for free. You instinctively know that those advertisers simply double the cost of the product you buy so that they can “give” you that second one you didn’t want or need.  However, consumers seem unable to resist this temptation so they buy, paying twice as much as they should have.  Of course this charade didn’t begin with television.  It’s as old as time.

Little wonder that so many are gaga for Sanders.  All he needs is a white beard and we could call him Santa Clause.   Continue reading “The Siren Song of Bernie Sanders”

The State of the Family

In his State of the Union address Tuesday, President Obama, once again, told us that “the state of the union is strong.”  Our citizens know differently.  Here’s what Obama didn’t tell you:

  • The unemployment rate may be down, but the labor participation rate is a paltry 62.6 percent. It is still stuck at a 38 year low.
  • The average hourly pay also is stuck, sliding one cent last month to $25.24. That left the growth of average pay at 2.5 percent for the year, well below the 3.5 percent economists consider healthy.
  • The same goes for health care.  The percentage of adults without coverage remains at around 12%.  Meanwhile, Obamacare premiums skyrocketed an average of 7.5%.
  • The Dow Jones industrial average, faded by 2.2 percent, its first down year since 2008.

Armed with this knowledge, I was much more interested in Monday night’s report on the “State of the Family” delivered by Tony Perkins at the Family Research Council Continue reading “The State of the Family”

The Cosby-Clinton Connection

The recent revelations about Bill Cosby have turned the nation’s decades-long love-affair with the actor into one of disgust, even repulsion.   This begs the question:  How long before the nation’s decades-long love-affair with the nation’s 40th president will come to an equally abrupt end?

The sordid stories of the sexual escapades of Bill Cosby and Bill Clinton are strikingly similar:

  • Both men held powerful positions in their respective fields which they abused again and again with no accountability.
  • Both men were surrounded by staff at various levels who were willing to coverup, if not facilitate, their encounters with vulnerable women.  Continue reading “The Cosby-Clinton Connection”

Why Christmas Matters

Last week, I went into the Gap to buy a gift card for a young friend of ours.  I asked for one that said “Merry Christmas” and the clerk said, “Oh, you won’t find anything like that in here.”  I was stunned.  Then I remembered an email I received from the American Family Association on its “Naughty or Nice” list listing retailers who were friendly or openly hostile to this annual opportunity to celebrate the birth of Christ.

I made a mental note to go back and check that “Naughty or Nice” list  as I thanked the clerk, but told here that I would go elsewhere.

Why would any company that does business in the United States go out of its way to insult 90 percent of the population?  Could it be that we are so busy “celebrating” that we have forgotten the reason for the season or that we no longer care?   Continue reading “Why Christmas Matters”

The Syrian Refugee Grinch in the White House

Cold, heartless, cruel, callous, merciless, hard-hearted!  Those are just a few of the words that have been used to describe Republicans and others who want to put the brakes on President Obama’s plan to resettle thousands of Syrians fleeing their war-torn country here in the United States.

Resettling those people constitutes a grave threat to our country given the fact that it is impossible to adequately vet them.  Nevertheless, our hearts go out to these people and quite naturally we want to help.

So here is the question for bleeding-heart liberals who want to throw caution to the wind and bring plane loads of these people here to the United States:  Would you like to help 10,000, which is Obama’s plan for the current year, or 610,000 of them? Obama Shills for Domestic Terrorists (Bypass Him and Defund Planned Parenthood Now!)

This week, Congress will present President Obama with a bill to fund the government through the remaining fiscal year and Obama will veto it.  Why?  Because the bill defunds the nation’s biggest domestic terrorist, Planned Parenthood, which mercilessly kills over 300,000 babies a year and sells their body parts.

Yes, Obama would rather shut down the government than cut off federal funds to one of the most immoral organizations on the planet.

Right on cue, USA Today published a poll conducted with Suffolk University to show that most Americans are opposed, 58% to 33%, to shutting off Planned Parenthood’s federal money spigot.  However, there are no links to give us a cue as to how this question was framed.  Surprise, Surprise!
